This year marks the ten year anniversary of the undeniably spine-crushing band MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT. While many have anticipated the apocalypse in 2012, MOTA has been accurately predicting and creating the soundtrack for such a disaster since 2003. There is perhaps no better way to celebrate such a milestone than by releasing a new face melting full-length record, and MOTA has never failed in that regard.

Available June 25th on Translation Loss Records – Pre-Orders Up Now

MOTA teamed up Pitchfork to premiere the first track from the band’s new album Dawning. The song entitled It Swarms can be heard HERE. Dawning is available for pre-order HERE.

In 2004 they released Time and Withering with great success and followed up with a split CD alongside another Dayton, OH based band, KENOMA. After releasing the critically acclaimed The Ties That Blind in 2006 and the beautifully devastating Quietly in 2008, the band underwent about a million member changes before releasing The Violence Beneath EP in 2010.

The current lineup consists of drummer Dave Mann, guitarists and vocalists Steve Brooks and Kevin Schindel, keyboardist and vocalist Jason Watkins, and bassist Evan Danielson. The band plans to celebrate its ‘most glorious birthday’ by releasing a psychedelic-tinged sludge-rock masterpiece. Remaining under the long time label support of Translation Loss Records, their new album Dawning bludgeons its way to the top of their long catalog of doom rock greatness. These dudes last proved their heavy-metallic weight in gold when they made it through a volcanic eruption to play the Roadburn Festival on their 2010 European tour in support of The Violence Beneath. This year these well-worn road veterans plan on bringing their incredibly loud and extremely hairy brand of post-metal to a venue near you in support of Dawning. Of course, you have to live in the northern hemisphere to get your chance to witness this rock ‘n roll spectacle.

In support of Dawning MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT will be touring this summer with Intronaut and Scale the Summit. The tour starts June 5th in Seattle, WA and runs through July 6th in Hollywood, CA. A complete list of dates can be found below.

Directed by Will Knapp, Ride The Void – the title track from their critically acclaimed sophomore release — can be seen below or on YouTube.

“You’d have to go back 20 years to find a metal record that achieves this level of instant infectiousness.” Decibel

The album is currently available on iTunes and Amazon MP3, as well as on CD or LP via RideTheVoid.com.

HOLY GRAIL are currently touring their way west with Exodus. The band will also play a show at the Viper Room in Los Angeles — their first hometown headlining performance since the release of Ride The Void – on May 15. Additional tour dates will be announced soon.

Esoteric, experimental artisan’s Locrian have revealed the details behind their highly anticipated Relapse Records full-length debut entitled Return To Annihilation. The album was recorded by Greg Norman (Pelican, Russian, Circles, Serena Maneesh) at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago, IL and mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering Service. The album will be released as CD, 2xLP, and digital formats on June 25th in North America, June 21st in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, and Finland, and June 24th in the UK and rest of the world.

A two-part concept album inspired by the band’s love for prog-rock progenitors Genesis, Yes & King Crimson, Return To Annihilation is sure to be the group’s most ambitious recordings to date. A trailer featuring a snippet of new music is available for viewing here while the cover art and pre-orders are available via this location. A tracklisting is listed below.

Lyricist / multi-instrumentalist Terrence Hannum commented on the album’s concept:

I think for the album concept we were inspired by Genesis’ Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and how it is a surreal narrative telling a story. We sought to make our own but we wanted to give our nod to the prog bands that inspired us; King Crimson or Yes with the multi-part songs.

So we had looked at the novel Dhalgren by sci-fi writer Samuel Delaney as a big influence too. How it is a circular narrative, ours is more of a mirror of itself, one that changes and shifts. It also borrows extensively from Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project.

Our story is about a cataclysm that changes the world and all manner of perception in two parts. I would say, the real and the perceived. And it is all told to you through a narrator, one who you cannot tell if he is asleep or dreaming or sleepwalking through this shifting landscape.

Part 1 begins at the end of a song whose lyrics discuss a dawn in which all of our monuments dissolved, the next track the wrath of heaven (a massive cataclysm) visits earth, then two moons appear in the sky (perhaps the most direct reference to Delaney’s novel but also an homage to Nick Drake). It ends with the first multi-part track Return to Annihilation, a more metaphysical description of the changes apparent in the world. One in which minerals work against man, there is only evolution. We also gain insight into that what we’ve been told may be unreliable as the narrator admits to “noctambulism” (sleepwalking). But it is intentionally unclear if this is his state or the state of everyone.

Part 2 is a view back through this mirror or lens of Part 1. We exit the hall or vapor and light and enter a panorama of mirror, the entire world as reflection. It ends with a four part piece about worshiping equilibrium in a world where it has been extinct (isostasy), discussing the qualities of the air that is now poisoned, witnessing the burial of urns (hydriotaphia) and finally awaking to awareness.

One of the things we wanted to accomplish was a sense of texture with mirrors, prisms, lenses, etc. being referenced in the sounds and tone. I think it does.

Locrian, located in Chicago, IL and Baltimore, MD, has released over 20 recordings on an eclectic array of labels in their relatively short but prolific career, including a recent reissue of The Clearing/The Final Epoch and New Dominions, a split with label-mates Horseback. The Clearing / The Final Epoch can be found streaming at this location while New Dominions is available for streaming here.

THE OCEAN Streaming Instrumental Version of New Album

In celebration of its forthcoming release, just three weeks away, Spin Magazine is currently streaming the instrumental version of THE OCEAN‘s Pelagial in its entirety!

Written, recorded, and intended to-be-performed-live as one single 53-minute piece of music, Pelagial is a multifaceted conceptual musical voyage that begins at the surface of the ocean and plunges through all five pelagic depth zones: epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathyalpelagic, abyssopelagic, and hadopelagic. In synch with diminishing light and increasing pressure as one dives or sinks deeper into the ocean, the album begins rather light and progressively gets heavier and slows as the band reaches the unfathomable depths of the hadopelagic zone, characterized by complete darkness and a thousandfold increased pressure as compared to surface level. The tracks, or episodes, are connected by interludes of underwater sounds and samples taken from old submarine movies, which give the album a claustrophobic “Das Boot“-kind of atmosphere.

“There are track marks, and there are actual songs built into this larger structure, but the whole album is a journey rather than a number of loose tracks, some riffs appear in the first two minutes of the album and then reappear 30 minutes later,” comments guitarist Robin Staps.

Delve into the sonic depths of Pelagial, courtesy of Spin Magazine, HERE or request The Ocean on The Welding Room (Tuesday’s 3:00-7:00pm & Thursday’s 5:00-9:00pm ET). Send your Death Threats/Complaints to TheWeldingRoom@gmail.com now.

Pelagial was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Witchcraft) at Fascination Street Studios in Örebrö, Sweden, and firmly stands as THE OCEAN’s deepest, most challenging entry to their winding catalog of sound exploration. Pelagial will be released as a double CD, which includes both vocal and instrumental versions of the album, on April 26/29 (Europe) and April 30 (North America/World) through Metal Blade Records. For preorder info, studio footage and more, visit the band’s Official Metal Blade Page.

Additionally, preorders are currently available for the vinyl edition of the album, released through Pelagic Records. The vinyl edition features two separate gatefolds with related artwork (by Seldon Hunt), holding four 10″ vinyl records in different colors! Order yours now at: http//www.pelagic-records.com/vinyl.

In related news, THE OCEAN will return to North America this summer as part of the 7th annual Summer Slaughter Tour, presented by Indie Merch Store, ESP and Guitar World. Set to run from July 19 through August 24, the band will appear alongside The Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, Revocation, Aeon and more. Official tour dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

PYRITHION Release Studio Video

It’s a struggle for some bands to get started, while others appear to seamlessly come together. With years of perspective and experience, the three members of Pyrithion have created a dark and intense death metal record almost overnight. The individual members’ prior success aside, the music speaks for itself. In an exclusive studio video, shot and edited by Ryan Glisan, fans can catch a glimpse of what it’s like to record inside Lambesis Studios. The new video is now streaming at metalblade.com/pyrithion.

The Burden of Sorrow to be released April 16th on Metal Blade Records

Singer Tim Lambesis, who is best known for his work as the front man of As I Lay Dying, explains: “I have wanted to do a heavier and more traditionally metal band for a while. Being that I own a recording studio, I thought a great place to start was by asking my engineer who the best guitar player is that he has recorded. I wanted to team him up with one of my favorite guitar players growing up.”

Shortly thereafter, Ryan Glisan from Allegaeon and Andy Godwin (ex-The Famine, Embodyment) began sending ideas back and forth. Those ideas would form the foundations of the first three Pyrithion songs.

Glisan elaborates further on the band’s expedited origin, “When Tim first reached out to me to ask if I was interested in starting a new project, I was really intrigued as to where the overall sound would go. Given the short time frame we had to work with, the ‘newness’ of all the members, and an uncertainty of an overall direction, I wasn’t initially 100% confident in how the end product would turn out. After spending a weekend collaborating, recording these initial 3 songs, and beginning to write new songs going forward, I can say with absolute confidence now that this band will be a major force in the metal scene.”

Pyrithion’s debut release, The Burden of Sorrow, stands as a showcase of what the members are capable of putting together over what merely amounted to an extended weekend. The total potential in Pyrithion is incredible and there is much anticipation for how the band will continue to develop as they prepare for a full length record.

Watch the lyric video for The Invention of Hatred at youtube.com/timlambesisofficial and pre-order your copy at metalblade.com/pyrithion.

The Burden of Sorrow will be released worldwide on Metal Blade Records on April 16, 2013.
