The Devil Wears Prada followed the release of DEAD THRONE with the hugely successful Dead Throne Tour: North America, captured for posterity on the recently released CD/DVD, DEAD&ALIVE. The collection includes performances of songs spanning TDWP‘s career, including such fan favorites as Danger: Wildman, Born To Lose, Kansas, Assistant To The Regional Manager and Outnumbered.

In addition, DEAD&ALIVE features an array of behind-the-scenes footage shot and edited by the band’s own Jeremy DePoyster.

Long hailed as a genuinely electrifying live act, The Devil Wears Prada have also proven indefatigable road warriors. In addition to countless headline dates and festival sets, recent highlights include spending summer 2012 alongside Slipknot, Slayer, Anthrax, and the one and only Motörhead as one of the main stage headliners on the all-star Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival.

As I Lay Dying preceded the release of their 6th full-length studio album, AWAKENED, with a highly successful run on 2012’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival where the band rotated between the side and main stages. Just before AWAKENED dropped via Metal Blade Records on September 25, the band released their first production video for the album for the track A Greater Foundation. Fans instantly took to the Internet to express their love of the new song – and to discuss the relevance of the lyrics. Check out the video and comments HERE.

The five-piece San Diego, Calif. based metal act, As I Lay Dying, recently concluded their run on the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour where they toured alongside Asking Alexandria, Memphis May Fire, and Attila, including a stop at the hugely successful California Metal Fest where the band electrified the stage and decimated metal fans with their powerful and blistering live set that the band is known for.

AWAKENED, which Rick Florino from Artist Direct called “…their best album yet,” noting “it’s a high water mark for modern metal, and it’s going to wake up the entire genre” giving the release 5 out of 5 stars, debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #11, selling over 28,000 copies in its first week in the US alone.

For their latest release, As I Lay Dying –NICK HIPA (guitar), TIM LAMBESIS (vocals), JORDAN MANCINO (drums), PHIL SGROSSO (guitar) and JOSH GILBERT (bass) holed up in the Blasting Room in Fort Collins, CO with renowned rock producer Bill Stevenson (Descendents) and mixer Colin Richardson. The group’s last LP, 2010s THE POWERLESS RISE, debuted on the Billboard Top 200 at #10, at #2 on Billboard’s Independent Albums Chart and #3 on Billboard’s Hard Music Albums Chart.

LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH debuted the title-track from Baphometic Chaosium on

Available for pre-order on iTunes and

Baphometic Chaosium to be released on January 22

It began nine years ago when a pact was made within a dilapidated house hidden in Southern California. It was here that Autarch, Roskva, and Menno found themselves in agreement that should the occult sciences be applied to their music, it would yield spectacular results. LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH, as it was later named, would be in itself a meticulously designed hyper-sigil, constructed to direct and antagonize the limitless dark energy that lurks within the less navigable chasms of the human mind, and in the space between spaces.

In 2007, the band unleashed The Golden Plague upon the earth, on the label. This declaration of unholy war inspired a tour of the West coast and the North Western blocks of the United States. Audiences witnessed performances by men possessed. LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH live continuously proved to be a conqueror’s fury leaving an ashen stain on every stage they destroyed. The tour began sharing battleground with bands like Nachtmystium and High On Fire, and concluded with LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH opening for Danzig during the mighty “Blackest Of The Black” tour. This lead to a growing cult, while press reactions to The Golden Plague (recorded in Roskva’s apartment) continued to glow like the embers of a raging pyre;

“I truly wanted to know how USBM crew LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH get their sound. It’s seriously crushing and vicious and yet it sounds like it’s 10 miles away. Or 10 miles underground. Uncanny. You know, it’s an art sounding this fucked up. …’Let This Knife Lead You To Us’ has a riff worth killing for” –Decibel

“LSOD leave no face un-ripped with a blackened death approach that puts as much importance on memorable hooks and downtrodden groove as it does on blast beat blaspheme” – Pit

The second release took the form of a split CD with comrades Valdur, which was only available for a limited time at performances during the country wide 2008 Blodhevn tour. Metal Maniacs called LSOD’s content a “heavy, bestial and brutal assault bringing to mind a young and hungry Thornspawn.”

The ubber rare split continues to infect all who experience its unyielding expression of true chaos, if they can track it down, and it was only a precursor of the grand and terrible horror that was already looming in the future, like a headsman’s shadow.

In 2009, while continuing to push their brand of brazen black metal through their DYI attitude, the band supplied multiple tracks for the Sony PSP game UNDEAD KNIGHTS, as well as a track featured on the soundtrack for the horror/thriller movie Stepfather (October 2009). Shortly after the initiation of drummer Mike Vega, LSOD signed a worldwide deal with Metal Blade Records. In 2010, The Extra Dimensional Wound was recorded in Corona, CA at Trench Studios with Roska producing and John Haddad engineering. It was then mixed and mastered by Sverker “Necro” Widgren at Necromorbus Studios in Stockholm Sweden (Watain, Funeral Mist, Ondskapt).

The band’s budding reputation as a relentless and “must see” black metal act also earned the band a coveted spot on the 2010 “Evangelia Amerika Tour,” headlined by Behemoth and joined by Septic Flesh from Greece. The Extra Dimensional Wound was also followed by a 2010 US tour with German thrash legends Kreator.

Not long after, the band was hand-picked to provide direct support for Immortal during their only Los Angeles appearance, and later invited to perform at the 2010 Scion Music Festival. Meanwhile, reviews continued to generate, in response to The Extra Dimensional Wound:

“Forget about over hyped geographically-based black metal superiority. LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH is a jaw-breaking example of USBM strength. “The Extra Dimensional Wound” is pure Armageddon.” —

“Autarch’s words seem to come from another place, ethereal and disturbing. ‘Nihilistic Stench’s’ double bass and blackened thrash, rips and shreds the flesh, until finally, ‘Path to Chaos’ gives the true sense of how much potential LSOD has with creating atmosphere, great song-writing, but most importantly, terror.” — The Gauntlet

2012, nearly 7 years after the release of The Golden Plague, LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH prepares to bring forth their third full length offering, the band’s second release on Metal Blade. The band had appropriately become a five piece (completing the pentacle) with the recruitment of lead guitarist “Inverted” Chris Velez, before they began developing what is described as “devotional work”, dedicated to their patron god – A mind altering experience compelled by the embodiment of chaos, death and ecstasy entitled Baphometic Chaosium. To record the psychedelic devilry, they returned to Trench Studios with John Haddad again seeing to the engineering with Roskva producing, no doubt to the delight of the tributed horned deity.

THE OCEAN To Release New Albumin 2013

2013 will be a busy year for THE OCEAN. The band will release a new album on April 26 (GSA), April 29 (Europe) and April 30 (USA) 2013 on Metal Blade Records, the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Heliocentric and Anthropocentric albums (2010).

To support the release, THE OCEAN will embark on a 3 weeks European tour with CULT OF LUNA in April and May (dates further below), including a performance at Roadburn Festival on April 20.

The new album will be a single album containing 52 minutes of new music. It will be mixed by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia) in January and will come in 2 versions: instrumental and with vocals.

Comments THE OCEAN’s Robin Staps:

The album was originally written to be instrumental, but in the end me and Loic couldn’t help but try out a few things vocal-wise and we soon got pretty excited… so there will be vocals on the album; however, we want everyone to have both versions, and we are also planning to perform the album live that way – with and without vocals.”

The special edition of the album will be released along with a film by Craig Murray (Nine Inch Nails).

The 3xDVD Collective Oblivion has been postponed for a release later in the year, but shall also see the light of day in 2013.

THE OCEAN and LO! have both been confirmed to play Roadburn Festival 2013 and as support acts on the upcoming tour of CULT OF LUNA.

New HELLOWEEN Video, LP Details Unveiled

Do we really have to worry? Is our civilization standing right on the edge of the abyss? Is the Maya calendar actually right, predicting the end of the world on December 21, 2012?

New age circles are convinced that the apocalyptic prophecy can be derived from the Mesoamerican civilization’s calendar.

“Complete bullshit”

reckons Andi Deris, singer of German melodic metal band Helloween.

“We will all survive the year 2012 and face an even more positive and energetic future.”

Helloween have documented how this future could look like, or rather sound like, on their latest studio album Straight Out Of Hell, scheduled right after the alleged doomsday on January 22, 2013. It’s a work full of speed and toughness, with optimism and great joy of playing, featuring complex arrangements, strong hooks and plenty of catchy melodies.

Or, to let the facts speak for themself: 13 mostly fast-paced songs that turn out to be impressively multi-layered and will completely delight all Helloween fans, due to the different songwriters Andi Deris, founding members Michael Weikath and Markus Großkopf, and guitarist Sascha Gerstner.

Weikath says:

“Straight Out Of Hell is the consequent development of the two albums before. 7 Sinners was recorded more or less in the wake of Gambling With The Devil, while the new songs are a continuation of the 7 Sinners directives, only a little less doom bound and noticeably more positive. These songs will kick even the laziest listener’s ass.”

Helloween’s guitarist is referring to tracks such as Make Fire Catch The Fly, Far From the Stars, Church Breaks Down, the title track (written by bass player Markus Großkopf), and the straightforward Years – all of them racing through the terrain at full speed. In addition, there is the complex and passionate Burning Sun by Michael Weikath, which Deris refers to short and sweet as “one of Weik’s highspeed masterpieces” (the limited edition will feature a special Hammond version in memory of Deep Purple’s recently deceased organ player Jon Lord). World Of War by Sascha Gerstner convinces with thrashy guitar riffs, demonstrating Helloween’s impressive virtuosity.

Deris comments:

“What’s so special about this band, is the fact that we were always allowed to do anything we wanted, or – even if we allegedly weren’t – did it anyway. Even the at the time slightly tabooed The Dark Ride initially earned us negative reviews, but ended up with multiple Gold Awards. That’s the kind of freedom you feel on Straight Out Of Hell as well – we didn’t let anybody or anything put pressure on us.”

But Helloween wouldn’t be Helloween if Straight Out Of Hell would not feature the band’s other, slightly more groovy side as well.

Deris has – in his own words – contributed Waiting For The Thunder,

“a rock song reminding of the old Pink Cream 69 tunes”

Gerstner lets off steam on Asshole and complements the album with Hold Me In Your Arms, a wonderful ballad, providing the desired antithesis to the otherwise extremely energetic record. Speaking of energy: the determination that has always been an integral part of the Helloween camp was captured perfectly by their producer Charlie Bauerfeind at the band’s own MiSueno studio in Tenerife. Bauerfeind consciously created a raw sound, keeping the edge of Helloween’s new songs and working without computer-controlled devices.

“With a world-class drummer like Dani Löble in the studio you don’t need click tracks or computer support”

Markus Großkopf praises his drummer.

“Thanks to Dani, the whole album breathes pure authenticity, which distinguishes Straight Out Of Hell from lots of other artists’ productions. In addition, the new album sounds more compact and homogeneous than 7 Sinners has, and is one of the fastest releases in Helloween’s history.”

Also, there are significant differences in a number of topics Helloween tackle on Straight Out Of Hell. The best example of the ability to think outside the box of pure metal cliché is their first single release Nabataea, which Helloween’s singer wrote during a holiday. The song is about the legendary kingdom, located in today’s Middle Eastern region, where the first real democracy existed over 3000 years ago. The secret Nabataean city Petra, hidden behind a cliff scenery and only discovered at the beginning of the 20th century, is the origin of many myths and legends.

Deris summarizes,

“We took the liberty to tell this exciting culture’s whole story, although the song therefore lasts more than seven minutes. Truth be told, if there had been more to tell, the track would have been even longer.”

(Redwood City, CaliforniaPICTURE ME BROKEN released their new EP entitled Mannequins on Standby Records today. In conjunction with the release of the EP, Metal Insider is hosting an exclusive stream of Mannequins. The EP can be heard in its entirety HERE. Be sure to check out an exclusive interview with Standby Records General Manager Shawn Carrano HERE.

The EP was produced and recorded by David Bendeth (Breaking Benjamin) features the single Torture which is available for streaming HERE and the EP can be streamed HERE.

PICTURE ME BROKEN is without question one of the most versatile rock acts working today. Led by Brooklyn Layla Allman, it hasn’t taken PICTURE ME BROKEN long to convince fans worldwide that they are a breed of old school soul meets modern day turmoil to create a modern sound that will appeal to all that experience it. With Allman’s father being the musical legend Gregg Allman, it would have been easy for this act to simply let his stigma dictate their career path and allow them somewhat immediate success. But Brooklyn and PICTURE ME BROKEN had different ideas; ideas of doing their work themselves, cutting their own niche out in a very tough active rock market, and slugging it out day by day on the road.  They have proven themselves to be musically superior to any act they’ve toured with to date by showing not only hard work, but a willingness to connect with their audience… one fan at a time if necessary.

With Allman out in front of PICTURE ME BROKEN, this is a band that commands attention from even the first glance.  Brooklyn Allman is clearly a beautiful woman, as is evidenced by her 2012 nomination in Revolver Magazine‘s “Hottest Chicks In Metal”. That however doesn’t begin to portray the incredible talent that she has as a singer, a songwriter and a performer. Allman’s voice showcases everything you could ever want from a vocalist; be it soft alluring pain on songs like Beautiful Disease or a much more guttural rage that she lets loose on songs like Holy Drug.

Mannequins is available on Amazon. It will be followed up in early 2013 with PICTURE ME BROKEN‘s debut full length release for Standby Records.

HEAVEN’S CRY Premiere Remixed/Remastered Track

Canadian progressive metallists HEAVEN’S CRY are streaming the track Gaia‘s Judgement from the remixed and remastered reissue of their debut album, Food for Thought Substitute, exclusively through HERE.

“Gaia’s Judgement was the first song I wrote with Sylvain (Auclair, bass/vocals) back in 1993, and the very first Heaven‘s Cry song”

says guitarist/vocalist Pierre St-Jean.

“It revolves around ecology, and how we are unconscious about our actions towards Gaia, which is The Earth personified as a goddess. Looking back, I think the topic is even more relevant today, for as a society, we were not as preoccupied about the environment back in the day as much as we are today!”

Guitarist Eric Jarrin (ex-Despised Icon) adds,

“It’s one of the first songs I heard before joining Heaven’s Cry, and I think it showcases the essence of what the band is, lyrically and musically. There’s the dual vocal attack, a lot of heavy riffing, some melodic parts; it’s really an epic prog song!”

HEAVEN’S CRY’s first two releases, Food For Thought Substitute and follow-up Primal Power Addiction, will be reissued by PROSTHETIC RECORDS on January 8, following the success of the band’s recently released comeback album Wheels of Impermanence. Both reissues feature revamped artwork and have been newly remixed by Yannick St-Amand (Despised Icon, Beneath The Massacre, Kataklysm) and remastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Symphony X). You can pre-order both albums at the PROSTHETIC IndieMerch store HERE (

Wheels of Impermanence marked the first new music from the band in the seven years. The band currently consists of St-Jean, Auclair, Jarrin and René Lacharité (drums). They were most recently seen headlining the prestigious ProgPower Europe festival in the Netherlands and have since been announced to appear at the 2013 ProgPower USA Festival.

RECOVERY COUNCIL Premiere First Single

Geek chicks sure can rock out and Rebeca Qualls is living proof. New Jersey-based RECOVERY COUNCIL began as Qualls’ nerdy lo-fi space rock solo project in grad school but has evolved into a power trio juggernaut with a heavy rock nucleus and a new album Plan-Do-Check-Act to be released January 15 on Dot Ultra Records.

Album Due Out January 15 on Dot Ultra Records

Plan-Do-Check-Act is RECOVERY COUNCIL’s third full-length studio album but the first release since becoming a full band in the summer of 2011. While the band’s sound has taken a more raucous turn, Qualls continues to exude her inner geek with lyrical introspect and technical allusion.

Fans can hear the first single from Plan-Do-Check-Act entitled Recourse,  HERE.

RECOVERY COUNCIL is Qualls on guitar and vocals, along with New Jersey native Jeff Trenholm on drums and Dominican Republic-born Isidro Santos on bass.

Since becoming a band in 2011, their collective influences lent to their rhythm-driven, melodic style. Qualls cites post-punk influences such as Husker Du and Helmet, but relies on her metal and rock roots dating back to her childhood, beginning with Iron Maiden, early Metallica, and Rush. The latter also made a big impact on Trenholm in his formative years, in addition to The Cure and Pink Floyd. Meanwhile, Santos found his niche in early-mid ’90s rock, including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, and Dominican-based Toque ProfundoPlan-Do-Check-Act captures a moment in time where the three musicians’ unique styles and backgrounds perfectly intersect as a cohesive whole.

RECOVERY COUNCIL will be hitting the road throughout the winter showcasing music from Plan-Do-Check-Act. A current listing of shows can be found below.

1/17/13: Newportville, PA @ Roadhouse Inn

2/7/13: Philadelphia, PA @ JR’s Bar
