KOLDBRANN Album Available Now

Black metal threat KOLDBRANN are streaming their new album, Vertigo in it’s entirety here.

KOLDBRANN have been spearheading the Norwegian underground black metal scene since their founding in 2001. Together with compatriots such as 1349, URGEHAL and others, the band remained true to the early spirit of the genre. Their brand new full-length sees KOLDBRANN drawing deep from their cold, raw black roots, while simultaneously exploring new, vintage sonic territory.

On the album, the band states:

“While KOLDBRANN has always paid tribute to the early pioneers of nordic Black Metal, the band has throughout its existence strived to retain a distinct identity. Spending our formative years in relative isolation in Drammen, away from the interference of any metal scene, we learnt to do things our own way from the get-go. In that respect, our third album, VERTIGO, represents a brand new chapter in the band´s history. While retaining a substantial share of uncanny groove, the album also explores more doom-ridden, and progressive soundscapes than on our earlier works. It still sounds very much like KOLDBRANN, but with a fuller, more complete flavor. Rest assured: Never have we put so much work and personal investments into an album. Never have we gone to greater lengths to chisel out each composition to suit our aural visions. It has been a long and winding road, and countless hours of tribulation. But that is now of the past. VERTIGO is here!”

Order Vertigo – available in CD format, and a gate-fold double LP in black and transparent vinyl – at the Season of Mist e-shop now.

KOLDBRAAN recently released Totalt Sjelelig Bankerott, a 7” single strictly limited to 300 copies worldwide, with an exclusive B side entitled Kasjtjeijs Svøpe. This vinyl edition is already sold-out but the single is available digitally. A music video for Totalt Sjelelig Bankerott, directed by Effektor and featuring guest vocals by Erlend Hjelvik from KVELERTAK can be viewed at Season of Mist’s YouTube channel.

KOLDBRANN toured all over Europe as part of prestigious festivals such as the Inferno Festival, Hole in the Sky, Summer Breeze, Party San Open Air and toured alongside ENDSTILLE, MARDUK, URGEHAL, TAAKE and many more.

KOLDBRANN news and tour updates available via the Season of Mist website, and KOLDBRANN website and Facebook page.

ANDY WINTERS Album Released Today

Andy Winter has been behind several noteworthy releases in the more progressive and avant-garde spectrum of the Norwegian post-black metal scene. His style of subdued, classically influenced progressive metal is probably not quite what most people think of when they hear the words Norwegian and metal mentioned together, as his music features a far more classical and progressive influenced sound than the groups of his usual co-collaborators.

He founded his first band in 1998, the quartet known as Winds, which consists of members from several well-known bands on the Norwegian metal scene (Mayhem, Arcturus, The Kovenant, Khold, etc.). From there he went on to form Age of Silence in 2004 (with members from Borknagar, Solefald, etc.). He has since participated on two records with Subterranean Masquerade and one with Self Spiller, in addition to recording a full length album with Sculptured (the side project with several members from the American folk metal band Agalloch).

Having kept busy making several records with his main bands throughout the 2000s, in addition to an instrumental piano EP as a solo artist, he started working on a new full length effort in 2008. His vision for this recording: To collaborate with some of the various musicians he had crossed paths with over the years, through his work in his own projects as well as some of the new friends encountered through being a The End Records artist for over a decade.

The result is Incomprehensible – a full-length album featuring the following tracks and vocalists:

1. Reversed Psychological Patterns (Agnete M. Kirkevaag of Madder Mortem)
2. My Illusions Are My Own (John Haughm of Agalloch)
3. Perfection Is The Blank Page (Kjetil Nordhus of Tristania, Trail of Tears & Green Carnation)
4. Somewhere Else To Disappear (Dan Swanö of Nightingale & Bloodbath)
5. Through The Eyes Of A Surrealist (Lars A. Nedland of Borknagar, Solefald & Age of Silence)
6. Far Beyond Autopilot (Heidi S. Tveitan of Star of Ash & Peccatum)
7. The Transversal Conjecture (Paul Kuhr of Novembers Doom & Subterranean Masquerade)
8. Back To Square Two (Lars E. Si of Winds, Before the Dawn & Sensa Anima)

Also appearing are Jan Axel von Blomberg (Mayhem, Arcturus & Winds), Carl August Tidemann (Winds & Arcturus), Øystein Moe (Winds & Ulver), Don Anderson (Agalloch & Sculptured) and Mike Young (The Devin Townsend Project). The album was produced by Andy Winter himself, mixed by Shaun Thingvold, mastered by Maor Appelbaum and features artwork by Travis Smith.

Having continued his approach of always applying a very genre-defying style, Incomprehensible is yet another unmistakable and unique record from Andy Winter, and one that provides a different experience altogether when compared to anything else in metal, or indeed most music.

Brendon Small’s Galaktikon, the critically acclaimed side-project of Brendon Small – the creative mastermind behind the smash-hit animated [adult swim] TV show Metalocalypse and the band Dethklok – will become the first metal act to headline an all-star lineup for WesFest 8: A Concert to Benefit the Wes Wehmiller Endowed Scholarship at Berklee College Of Music at The Roxy in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 3, 2013. The show marks the live debut of the project, and the event is sponsored by Gallien-Krueger Amplification, Mike Lull Custom Guitars, D’Addario Strings, Epiphone Guitars, and Studio Instument Rentals (S.I.R.).

The scholarship fund honors Wes Wehmiller (1971-2005), a Berklee graduate (’92) and highly accomplished bassist, athlete and photographer who died of thyroid cancer in January 2005. Established by his family and friends, the Wes Wehmiller Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to a continuing student at Berklee who best exemplifies the excellence and grace Wehmiller showed as a bassist and as a human being. The WesFest concert series and related fundraising drive has raised more than $150,000 over the past seven years. This year, the goal is to raise $25,000.

Before Metalocalypse and Dethklok’s runaway success, Brendon Small, a Berklee alum (‘97), began his career in animation as the co-creator, writer, voice actor, composer and musician for the TV show Home Movies. Small has also lent his voice to a number of other shows including The Venture Bros., Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Squidbillies, Reno 911!, and Frisky Dingo. He then reprised his co-creator/writer/voice actor/director/producer/music-composer role for Metalocalypse, which premiered in August 2006 and just completed its fourth season on [adult swim]. But in April of 2012, Small branched out to write and produce Brendon Small’s Galaktikon, a self-described “High Stakes Intergalactic Extreme Rock Album.” The long-awaited side project was inspired not just by modern metal, but also by Queen, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer.

Brendon Small himself had this to say:

“I’m excited to get this album up on its feet in a live scenario with some of the best musicians on this planet.”

The live band required to pull off the multi-layered music of Brendon Small’s Galaktikon will contain four guitarists, including L.A.-based guitarist and former Musicians Institute Guitar Program Director Jude Gold (Jefferson Starship, Billy Sheehan), Mike Keneally (Dethklok, Frank Zappa, Joe Satriani), Rick Musallam (Ben Taylor, Carly Simon), and Small himself. Additional band members include keyboardist/guitarist Walter Ino; bassist Bryan Beller (Dethklok, Steve Vai, The Aristocrats); drummer Tim Yeung (Morbid Angel); and vocalists Ben Thomas (Zappa Plays Zappa), Kira Small (Peter Frampton, Martina McBride), Ali Handal (Neil Young, Paul Williams) and Jude Crossen.

“We’re beyond psyched to have Brendon Small’s Galaktikon making its debut at WesFest 8,” says event co-producer and Galaktikon bassist Beller. “For seven years we’ve been growing the WesFest community with every event, especially in Southern California. But this year, thanks to Brendon’s involvement, we’ve got a greater chance to reach more folks around the country than ever before.”

The event will feature three additional acts: Los Angeles funk/R&B bassist Derek Frank (Jonatha Brooke, Brian Auger); the WesFest All-Stars, featuring the music of previous WesFest performers and singer/songwriters Janet Robin (Lindsey Buckingham), Ali Handal, and Colin Keenan, along with a special group assembled by Zappa Plays Zappa drummer Joe Travers; and Danny Mo and the Exciters, featuring Wehmiller’s Berklee bass professor and close friend Danny Morris, as well as 2012 Wehmiller Scholarship award winner Jed Lingat and legendary drummer John “JR” Robinson

From 1997 through 2001, Wes Wehmiller toured worldwide with the multi-platinum pop band Duran Duran, and appeared on many TV shows with them as well, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,The Today Show, VH-1’s Storytellers, and Hard Rock Live. He performed with Missing Persons and several other L.A. based bands, and his work appears on numerous recordings produced in the L.A. area and in Vancouver. He gained endorsement deals with SWR bass amplification systems and La Bella Strings.

WesFest 8 advance tickets are available through March 1 for $35 per pair of tickets or $20 per single ticket. Tickets are $30 each at the door. Ticket orders and donations will be accepted via check or credit card. Complete ordering instructions and procedures can be found online at:http://weswehmiller.net/wesfest/wesfest-8.

For any questions about ordering tickets or donating to the fundraising drive, please contact Peter Gordon at 818.380.3041 or pgordon@berklee.edu.

For additional biographical information on Wes Wehmiller, and more information on the WesFest concert series, as well as new details about WesFest 8 as they become available, please visit the official Wes Wehmiller Tribute Website at www.wesfest.com.

MANOWAR Founding Member Returns To Metal

As a founding member of both Manowar and the Dictators, guitarist Ross the Boss needs no introduction. But it’s been a while since the metal masses heard from Ross, leading some to wonder if or when he would return. The wait is now over, as his newly formed outfit, Death Dealer, is ready to rock and take the world by storm, with their debut album, Warmaster.

“The Death Dealer sound is a mighty combination of five very talented, seasoned musicians,” explains Ross.

“It’s classic power metal with the brutal edge of thrash, speed, and precision.”

And when he says the band is comprised of talented and seasoned musicians, he’s not kidding, as Death Dealer also includes vocalist Sean Peck (Cage), guitarist Stu Marshall (producer and guitarist for such voices as Udo Dirkschneider and Steve Grimmett), bassist Mike Davis (Rob Halford, Lizzy Borden), and drummer Rhino (Manowar).

Formed last year via correspondence over the internet, as soon as work commenced on the material, Ross knew he had met his metallic match.

“Well, after they sent the first tune over, I was blown away, then Stu and Sean tell me they want me to join this band, called Death Dealer. I say, ‘Who else is in the band? They say, ‘Rhino on drums.’ I’m in! Stu goes, ‘It was either you or we would have asked KK Downing to be on guitar.’ Wow!” – Ross the Boss

As evidenced by such tunes as Death Dealer, Never to Kneel and The Devil’s Mile, for fans of authentic, no-holds-barred, manly heavy metal, Warmaster is an absolute godsend. And soon, Death Dealer will be converting metalheads worldwide to their cause.

“Our future plans? Obviously to put Death Dealer on the worldwide metal map, and to engage large crowds and render them shocked and satisfied.”
