New Jersey birthed heavy metal in the United States in the early 1980’s and it all started in a stall in the Route 18 Flea Market with Jonny Z and Marsha Z, where they sold rare records and Imported vinyl, picture discs and rock rags from around the world. This tiny little record shop soon became infamous for being the only place stateside where you could find the heaviest and hardest music from the farthest reaches and your own backyard.

Rock N Roll Heaven became the Metal mecca and anyone interested in this new underground wave of music known as “Heavy Metal” needed to pilgrimage to Rock N Roll Heaven at the flea market the only place to buy pins, patches, demos, and more it was the hub for news to find out what was happening anywhere in Metal. The shop owners began throwing concerts in local skate rinks and clubs, because no one else would put together a metal line-up.

Rock N Roll Heaven became a second home, only home for many, for one historical group the original Fans of Metal – aptly named The Old Bridge Metal Militia, a group of working class, hell raising teens from blue collar Old Bridge, NJ.

These were the most loyal group of fans any band has ever had – Metallica, Slayer, Raven, and many more young fledgling soon to be metal titans made their way into the hearts, homes and refrigerators of the OBMM before anyone even knew they existed and it was the unity of Rock N Roll Heaven and the OBMM that birthed Megaforce records and essentially Thrash as we know it today.

Megaforce went on to put out Metallica’s first 2 albums and made way for Testament, Overkill and paved the way for CraZed Management the Zazula’s management firm that nurtured Anthrax for 13 years and Ministry in the height of their fame plus many, many more.

After many years, OBMM & the Zazula’s are teaming up once again. Holding this fundraiser concert for the victims of Superstorm Sandy, Metal is now giving back to the community.

ED TRUNK (THAT METAL SHOW) will perform Master of Ceremonies duties with special guest hosts and an all-star jam to be announced.  With a now confirmed line-up of ANVIL, RAVEN, THE RODS and LORDS OF MERCY this evening is poised for a metal pounders delight.

ROCK N’ ROLL HEAVEN and OLD BRIDGE METAL MILITIA ask all attendees to bring canned goods or non-perishable food items for a food drive which will benefit local area soup kitchens and shelters.to thrash metal.

This is an event to benefit the victims of Superstorm Sandy, which wreaked havoc on the Jersey Shore and on the lives of its residents. Superstorm Sandy has left dozens dead and thousands homeless – making it the worst storm in the region’s history. This is a 100% non-profit event.

WESFEST 8 BENEFIT Concert Raises $27,000

(LOS ANGELES, CA) – WesFest 8, the eighth annual WesFest benefit concert, took place at The Roxy in Los Angeles on March 3, 2013. For the second year in a row, the concert and related fundraising drive broke all previous records and raised more than $27,000 for the Wes Wehmiller Endowed Scholarship Fund at Berklee College of Music. The total amount generated by the WesFest initiative since its inception in 2006 has now exceeded $175,000.

Officially supported this year by corporate sponsors Epiphone Guitars, Gallien-Krueger Amplification, Mike Lull Custom Guitars, D’Addario Strings, DW Drums, and Studio Instrument Rentals, the WesFest concert series has made the Wes Wehmiller Scholarship one of the leading awards for performance majors at Berklee College Of Music. Established by Wes’ family and friends in 2005, the Wes Wehmiller Scholarship is awarded annually to a continuing student at Berklee who best exemplifies the excellence and grace Wehmiller showed as a bassist and as a human being. The WesFest concert series serves as the centerpiece for a continuing fundraising drive for the scholarship fund, which honors the legacy of Wehmiller, a Berklee graduate (‘92) and highly accomplished bassist, athlete, and photographer who died of thyroid cancer in January, 2005.

“We’re grateful to everyone who donated their time and efforts to make this year’s event an unprecedented success,” says WesFest producer Bryan Beller, “and especially for our sponsors, who had a big hand in making it possible.”

Two lucky fans walked away with a Gallien-Krueger MB500 bass amp, and an Epiphone Thunderhorse Explorer guitar.

The WesFest 8 concert was headlined by Brendon Small’s Galaktikon, the critically acclaimed side-project led by the creative mastermind behind the smash-hit animated [adult swim] TV show Metalocalypse and the band Dethklok. It was the all-star 11-piece band’s debut live performance, featuring guitarists Jude Gold (Jefferson Starship, Billy Sheehan), Mike Keneally (Dethklok, Frank Zappa, Joe Satriani), Rick Musallam (Ben Taylor, Carly Simon), and Small himself; keyboardist/guitarist Walter Ino; bassist Bryan Beller (Dethklok, Steve Vai, The Aristocrats); and vocalists Ben Thomas (Zappa Plays Zappa), Kira Small (Peter Frampton, Martina McBride), Ali Handal (Neil Young, Paul Williams) and Jude Crossen (Patti Austin, Lee Ritenour, Phil Perry).

In a long-standing WesFest concert tradition, the 2012 Wehmiller Scholarship winner performed at WesFest 8. Bassist Jed Lingat showed the 300-plus crowd exactly what they were supporting, laying down heavy grooves with Danny Mo & The Exciters, a band of mostly Berklee graduates featuring legendary drummer John “JR” Robinson (Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, Madonna, Eric Clapton), as well as singer/songwriter Kira Small (Peter Frampton, Martina McBride) on lead vocals. The band was led by Wehmiller’s Berklee Bass Professor and close friend Danny Morris. Danny plays a key role in selecting the scholarship winner, and is central to the WesFest community both in Boston and Los Angeles.

“The LA experience is unique and cherished every year by the award recipient, and Jed’s bass playing and demeanor are exemplary of the kind of person Wes would have loved and grooved to,” says Morris.

“At rehearsal, ‘JR’ gave me the sign of approval acknowledging the deep groove pocket that Jed was cementing in the low end. And the WesFest crowd at the Roxy shared their love with a tremendous ovation to the bass player. Now that got Wes smiling!”

Other performers at WesFest 8 included many musicians who knew and worked with Wes during his twelve years in Los Angeles, including first-time bandleader Joe Travers (drummer for Zappa Plays Zappa), Rick Musallam, Griff Peters, Colin Keenan, Ali Handal, and Janet Robin. WesFest newcomer Derek Frank opened the show with a blistering set of tight, horn-drenched funk.

“It really says something that, for every one of the past eight years we’ve done this, we’ve been able to hit our fundraising goals and increase the size and scope of the WesFest community,” says Peter Gordon, Director of the Berklee Center In Los Angeles.

“This year we’re extremely grateful to Brendon Small, as we are to all of the WesFest 8 performing artists, for helping us reach a whole new realm of awareness for both the event, and for Wes himself.”

For additional biographical information on Wes Wehmiller, WesFest, and all related merchandise, please visit the official Tribute To Wes Wehmiller Website at www.weswehmiller.net. RAMMING SPEED Stream New Track, Reveal Album Info

Grinding Dissent is a track from RAMMING SPEED’s Kurt Ballou-tracked Prosthetic debut, Doomed To Destroy, Destined To Die, due out June 25 on CD, LP, cassette and digital download.

The band commented on the track as follows:

Grinding Dissent is largely about America’s facade of righteousness and freedom. A government that is ‘for the people’ may or may not have originally been the goal, but in this day and age, it’s obvious that protest and free speech aren’t welcome. Our police departments have military-grade weapons turned on civilians to keep us quiet while politicians smile and shake hands behind closed doors. Musically. the song starts off with punishing D-beat and ends with Ferrari-sized, Piña Colada-chugging twin guitar riffage! Put this shit on 11, crack a beer and scream at the sun.”

Head to PROSTHETIC’s web store now to check out pre-order packages for Doomed To Destroy, Destined To Die, which include a mail-order exclusive clear haze/neon green vinyl variant along with an exclusive t-shirt or long-sleeved shirt featuring the album’s artwork, featured above. The band is living up to their reputation as “one of the hardest-working bands in heavy metal” (Noisecreep) on a tour with Goatwhore, 3 Inches of Blood and Revocation; they will continue to tour the US with Valient Thorr and Gypsyhawk throughout the rest of the summer.

AXIS Artwork To Commemorate Golden Gods Awards

Celebrating the Golden Gods Awards that is to take place tonight, G-Pen commissioned renowned artist and musician, Axis to create an illustration that will honor musicians as they walk the black carpet.

AXIS (born March 26, 1973 in London, England) is a contemporary illustrator/working class fine artist who emerged from Los Angeles’ seminal graffiti scene in the 1980s. He is most noted for his convoluted and hyper-stylized freehand characters, and illustrations.

As a child, Axis moved from London to Los Angeles with his family and developed a number of musical and artistic influences including Mozart, Black Sabbath, Black Flag, Frank Frazetta, Rick Griffin, Norman Rockwell, and even Monty Python’s Flying Circus. An early convert to skateboarding and punk rock, Axis began experimenting with graffiti art in 1984, and joined L.A.’s legendary CBS Crew in 1988. By the mid-90s he had cemented his reputation as one of the most prolific street artists working in Los Angeles. Though his career has largely unfolded outside of the graffiti landscape, his skate-punk origins continue to shape his engorged aesthetic and politicized black humor.

In addition to his artwork, Axis is also widely known as a musician. Having played (harpsichord, cello, piano) since early childhood, Axis went on to form Los Angeles hard-core/Metal band The Pain (lead guitarist, songwriter) in 2004. He has recorded two full-length albums and has toured Europe and the United States

Axis lives in Los Angeles, California where he currently exhibits his paintings in some of the most respected Art Galleries, and Museums, and he continues to paint and play music everyday. Oh yes, and he skates when he can.

To see more of Axis’ work, check out www.stylepig.com
Follow him on Instagram – @axisvalhalla

On our recent visit to Axis’ gallery, we were fortunate to get the full-blown tour by the legend himself. Here’s a small glimpse of what we got to see: http://www.grencoscience.com/blogs/news/7796211-axis-x-g-pen-commemorate-the-golden-gods
