Timo Tolkki‘s Avalon – The Land of New Hope (Frontiers)
Okay, I believe I have already made my thoughts on this album abundantly clear. I love this album.
It is not the most brutal (nor is this the intention), but achieves metal honors in every other category taken into consideration. The difficult part about grading this artifact is trying to distinguish the best parts when they are all so good. Each opus easily stands alone. Since it is a metal opera, it can only be fully appreciated in it’s entirety, which would be my recommendation.
However, if you want some extra time for Cattle Decaps and ST4P, let these selections do you right.
1. Avalanche Anthem
2. A World Without Us
5. We Will Find a Way *
7. The Magic of the Night (I can’t remember if this reminds me of Hammerfall or Nocturnal Rites. The vocals do get a little exciting)
8. To the Edge of the Earth * (WOW! Watch out, this one moves)
10. The Land of New Hope (unfortunately, not about New Hope, PA. This song has a little of everything, which is not surprising considering it clocks in at just under 9 minutes. A spectacular finale)
