“Harbinger” — a follow up to MUTILATION RITES acclaimed underground debut “Empyrean” —  was released last summer via Prosthetic Records. Described as a “nightmarish merger between black, death, d-beat, and doom” (Pitchfork), the album was recorded by long-time friend and producer Kevin Bernsten (TRIAC) and mastered by James Plotkin (Pelican, Isis, SunnO))), Isis). Its eight tracks of “invigorating and nerve-wracking debauchery” (Dead Rhetoric) are perfectly accompanied visually by noted cover artist Valnoir (Psycroptic, Watain, The Black Dahlia Murder).

SAINT VITUS Stream Unreleased Track

Heavy/Doom metal progenitors SAINT VITUS are streaming one of the bonus tracks from their forthcoming reissue of ‘C.O.D.’ The bonus track, titled “The Chameleon” is streaming now at Pitchfork.

Regarding the unreleased track, guitarist Dave Chandler said,

“I sent our U.S. label (at the time ) the tracks “The Chameleon” and “To Breed A Soldier” that I wrote with Christian (Linderson). The label did not like the direction the album was going and that really pissed us off. I scrapped everything I was working on and told Christian that things were not working out, so he left and went back home to Sweden.

The two bonus songs on the reissue weren’t actually  written for the C.O.D. Both were written after C.O.D. was released, and were  intended to be demo tracks for the next SAINT VITUS album. As they were the only other recordings from the era with Christian,  we decided to put them out on the C.O.D. re-issue.”

The re-issues of ‘COD’ and ‘Die Healing’ will be available on CD, limited-edition double LP, and colored vinyl gatefold LPs. ‘Remastered and enhanced with two previously unreleased bonus tracks, ‘C.O.D.’ features COUNT RAVEN’s Christian Linderson on vocals, while ‘Die Healing’ see’s original SAINT VITUS singer Scott Reagers return to the mic. All formats can be pre-ordered here.

SAINT VITUS recently streamed two songs off ‘Die Healing’ and ‘C.O.D.” The tracks, “One Mind” and “Children of Doom” can be found here.

SAINT VITUS previously released ‘Lillie: F-65‘. The album, their first in 17 years, reunites the unmistakable guitar playing of co-founder Dave Chandler with the deeply resonate vocals of hard rock legend Scott “Wino” Weinrich. ‘Lillie: F-65’ is streaming at the official SAINT VITUS Bandcamp page.

Updated SAINT VITUS news and tour information will be made available at the Season of Mist website and the SAINT VITUS website, Facebook, and Myspace pages.

“the boys are on fire here, flush with renewed energy and basking in the glow of their newfound power” – Pitchfork

“This sick behemoth of a sound – and patented strangled-cat guitar solos – could only come from one band, and that’s a window into why Lillie: F-65 succeeds as a whole: the Saint Vitus Character remains intact, never fucked-up with modern contrivances. Doubtful that Sabbath’s own 2012 comeback will be even a faction this good” -Decibel

“it’s clear that their chops have only increased in the intervening years, and they certainly haven’t lost their ability to bring dynamics to a slothful subgenre” – Outburn

“Vitus shows the enduring significance of their approach, and that what proved true about them in their initial run is no less true now: By not being of their era, they were and remain timeless. Saint Vitus are more relevant now than they’ve ever been, and Lillie: F-65 shows a good deal of why. No doubt one of 2012’s landmark albums. Highly recommended” – The Obeslisk

THE OCEAN Roadside Update – 7/31/2013

THE OCEAN are currently making their way through North America as part of the seventh annual Summer Slaughter Tour. Presented by Indie Merch Store, ESP and Guitar World, the progressive sound contortionists are leveling stages nightly alongside The Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, Revocation, Aeon and more.

Founding guitarist Robin Staps comments of the trek:

“Summer Slaughter has been a blast so far… we struggled with some technical issues in the beginning and, and finding a setup/routine that works within those 10 minutes changeovers wasn’t easy, but we’re there now, and have been thoroughly enjoying the past few shows. More good stuff to come!”

THE OCEAN have added a number of last minute US headlining shows on the Summer Slaughter off days which include performances in Hartford, Omaha and Vancouver as well as a very special meet & greet on August 6 in Brooklyn, New York at Saint Vitus Bar.

Elaborates Staps:

“On August 6th, we will all be hanging out at Saint Vitus bar in Brooklyn, where we played a great show in 2011 with support from Pelagic Records recording artists Family, and The Binary Code, as some of you may remember. We are stoked to see these two awesome bands perform at Saint Vitus Bar again, as well as Black Table. Rumors have it that there is this band called ‘Pelagial’ playing as well, we’re very curious to find out what that is all about… we will all be there to sign whatever stuff you bring, preferably foreheads, melons or live animals, so come say hi if you’re from the NYC area!”

Following the band’s stateside takeover, THE OCEAN will play select shows throughout Taiwan, China and Russia before embarking upon a full European headlining tour set to commence on October 29, 2013. Support will come by way of Norway’s Shining, Poland’s Tides From Nebula and France’s Hacride. See all confirmed dates below.

In related news, THE OCEAN recently launched a brand new video for “Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams” from their most recent album, Pelagial. The band’s first official music video, not counting previous videos composed of live footage, was directed by Alexander Kraudelt and Lukas Hambach and produced by Frameshock, with additional visuals by Craig Murray. Upon initial post, the video was instantly censored by YouTube because of nudity but is now available via Vimeo. (Update: the video is back on YouTube and is age-restricted)

“…ambitious and adventurous…” – Terrorizer

“The sixth album from German post-metal doombringers THE OCEAN is huge… In the course of the record, tender piano interludes get stomped on by Mastodon-shaped footprints, lush strings work next to bulldozing double-kick work, and, at the end, the submarine crashes at Melvins tempos” – Spin

“…a hallmark album for a gifted team of artisans… Pelagial is one of the most invested albums THE OCEAN has yet conceived. Prepare to be not only submerged but actually touched by this album” — Blabbermouth

“Pelagial is brilliantly written, expertly executed and filled with the kind of songwriting most bands can only dream of” – Crave Online

“Pelagial resonates so deeply because its sonic continuity is matched with shifting, unified composition. The album viscerally depicts the spectrum of submersion while highlighting the musicians’ versatility and cohesion. The band has never written more intriguing music, and THE OCEAN COLLECTIVE has never been a more apt name” – MetalSucks

“…a journey within itself…” — Metal Insider

“…destined to be one of the year’s best releases” – Echoes And Dust

“Creating music with a real meaning cannot be taken as a hobby. Either you put everything into it and make your message known or you don’t. Their correlation between diving deeper into the ocean and diving into the inner workings of the human mind is astounding… you would be a complete fool to not pick up this true work of art” – New Noise Magazine

Esoteric, experimental artisan’s Locrian are currently streaming their forthcoming full-length Return To Annihilation via Spin.com at this location. Spin describes the album as a “an eclectic float down murky, noxious, sludgy waters” and compares the group to everyone from Boards of Canada to Sunn0))) to Neurosis.

Return To Annihilation was recorded by Greg Norman (Pelican, Russian, Circles, Serena Maneesh) at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago, IL and mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering Service. PENTAGRAM Confirm Select Dates

Doom legends, PENTAGRAM, announced shows in the US this summer. These shows will follow the previously announced festival dates in Europe throughout July. The complete list of dates including the US shows are listed below, and facebook.com/pentagramusa.

In other news, premium subscription channel SHOWTIME just picked up the documentary Last Days Here from influential doom legends PENTAGRAM–showings can be found HERE.

PENTAGRAM’s most recent album, Last Rites, was released via Metal Blade Records on April 14, 2011 and their first ever official DVD (also out on Metal Blade), When the Screams Come, on August 30, 2011. Both releases were met by rave reviews from fans and critics alike and saw the band playing sets at infamous SXSW festival in Austin TX as well as tours across the US and dates in Europe. Recently, after months of searching and reviewing literally hundreds of applicants from around the world, PENTAGRAM announced the addition of their new guitarist Matt Goldborough. His debut with the “Ram Family,” rounded out by Bobby Liebling on vocals, Greg Turley on bass guitar and Sean Saley on drums, was on April 16, 2013 at the sold out show at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, NY. If that gig wasn’t special enough, the band performed songs not heard live in over 40 years! Inspired by a demand from the fans, Liebling and company pulled out rare gems, including Be Forewarned. This track and more can be viewed now at metalinjection.net.

“No one has done doom better, for longer, than Bobby Liebling” SPIN Magazine

“an unsung American counterpart to Black Sabbath” San Francisco Weekly

“Bobby Liebling’s vocals proved to be haunting yet comforting at the same time. The man has lost a lot to demons that kept him from achieving rock stardom decades ago, but his voice remains as powerful as it was then” LA Weekly

DYING FETUS Recruit ABIOTIC, RIVERS OF NIHIL To Fall Tour

Dying Fetus announced their headlining tour for this Fall with Exhumed, Devourment, Waking the Cadaver (10/4-10/19), as well as up-and-coming Metal Blade Records artists Abiotic, and Rivers of Nihil (10/26-11/2).

Surfacing from the heart of South Florida, Miami’s ABIOTIC transcends high above the rest with a most preternatural sound. By interweaving well-cultivated musical dexterity and pronounced lyrical finesse, ABIOTIC epitomizes an unwonted entity of unmatched musicianship. In a short amount of time since the quintet’s inception in 2010, this ghoulish coterie has made a paramount impact in the death metal scene and support from the masses continues to grow. The five-piece group consists of vocalist Ray Jimenez, bassist Alex Vazquez, drummer Andres Hurtado and guitarists Matt Mendez and Johnathan Matos. The band’s Metal Blade debut, Symbiosis, is available everywhere now and their Dan Drescher-directed music video, Facades, is streaming at metalblade.com/abiotic.

Reading, Pennsylvania’s death metal quintet, Rivers of Nihil, recently entered Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg with Erik Rutan to record their first full-length album and Metal Blade Records debut, which is due out before the end of 2013. Tracking has been completed and finishing touches are being put on the album and the artwork. Music and information will be released in the coming months. Until then, fans can sample what’s to come in a demo for Rain Eater on soundcloud HERE.

Rivers of Nihil guitarist Brody Uttley comments on the tour:

“We’re incredibly excited to be part of this tour. Dying Fetus played a huge role in shaping the early sound of Rivers of Nihil and they continue to influence us to this day, and we grew up listening to Exhumed and Devourment and we’re honored to be touring with them. We’re also excited to be touring with some of our younger peers and Metal Blade brothers in Abiotic. We’ll be playing all new material from our new album, which will be coming out later this year.”
