EARTHLESS Unveils New Song

Award-winning San Diego power rock band EARTHLESS will release its brand new album From the Ages on October 8 via Tee Pee Records. The first new studio album from the globally celebrated trio since the release of 2007’s critically acclaimed Rhythms from a Cosmic Sky, the hour-long double LP was recorded with producer Phil Manley (Trans Am, The Fucking ChampsSubArachnoid Space).

NOISEY premiered the new EARTHLESS track Equus October, calling the band’s sound “sonic sculptures as powerful as Heisenberg meth.”  The song premiere also includes an in-depth interview with drummer Mario Rubalcaba, who talks in detail about the band, recently dubbed “expert practitioners of an outdated art” by the New York Times.

Stereogum recently unleashed the brand new EARTHLESS song Violence of the Red Sea, calling the band’s sound “an absolutely apocalyptic brand of instrumental stoner-psychedelic-doom that relies on each player basically being a total powerhouse carrying an equal (and very heavy) load.”  Rock EARTHLESS‘ stunning “Violence of the Red Sea” right now at THIS location.

Pitchfork is also giving music fans the first taste of new EARTHLESS, premiering the new song Uluru Rock.  Check out EARTHLESS‘ “Uluru Rock” now at THIS location.

“We feel this is some of the strongest material that we have ever created and we cannot wait to get out there and share it with everyone in a live setting,” said the band when asked for comment.

From the Ages‘ sprawling, epic cover art was created by renowned rock music poster artist Alan Forbes (Queens of the Stone Age, SWANS, Black Crowes) while the record’s surreal inner design was brought to life by the band’s own Mike Eginton.

Formed in 2001, EARTHLESS prides itself on creating energetic, utterly unique and free thinking instrumental music inspired by an eclectic mix of German kraut rock and Japanese heavy blues-rock. The Californian trio has dedicated itself to mastery of the mind-bending jam session, evoking the spirits of Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath in equal measure.

Named after a song title from vintage New York garage-psych band The Druids of Stonehenge, EARTHLESS‘ sound has been called “a sonic kaleidoscope of lava and lightning”, earning it the title of “California’s loudest band.”  The group delivers “one of the best live shows in all of modern, heavy rock,” leading to one reviewer stating that the band’s “epic shredding harkens back to the days were psychedelic rock had balls the size of grapefruits and wasn’t afraid to take its listeners on a ride for which they may never return.”

Each member of EARTHLESS has done time in many other bands. Drummer (and former pro skater) Mario Rubalcaba currently plays in the hardcore punk band OFF! and has also occupied the drum throne in Rocket From The Crypt and Hot Snakes amongst many others. Bassist Mike Eginton played with Electric Nazarene and guitarist Isaiah Mitchell was most recently in Howlin’ Rain, has played with Nebula and Drunk Horse and also heads up the Bay Area band Golden Void.

In the end, EARTHLESS is the musical rock that grounds the three musicians and now, after more than half a decade since the release of their last studio LP, EARTHLESS has returned and is out to prove — through sheer rock power — why they are considered the cream of the modern day heavy psych scene.

Earthless : Sonic Prayer Jam 2012

News and tour information available via ACTION! PR online (website / facebook / twitter).

“EARTHLESS From the Ages (Tee Pee) is the first album in six years by the San Diego psychedelic band, who make songs in long chunks of episodic form via wah-wah pedal, riff and groove; they’re expert practitioners of an outdated art” – THE NEW YORK TIMES

“To describe EARTHLESS’ music is a bit like describing a dream. In fact, there’s nothing altogether straight forward about the band’s sound except, well, that they fucking rock. Yeah, let’s go with that description: Fucking-rock” – SAN DIEGO CITYBEAT

“EARTHLESS purvey majestic acid rock, a genre that bakes the neurons with industrious instrumentals. And this trio blisters more brain cells than most. EARTHLESS keeps even this interpretation ruggedly exploratory, moving with transcendent skill from classic rock badlands to heavy metal cosmos” – SF WEEKLY

“EARTHLESS can do dynamics, shifting from hazy clouds of feedback to sludgy doom riffage, but they generally don’t. Instead the band starts at 100% speaker-cone-bursting ear-drum-rattling intensity and stays there for as long as physically possible. It’s sort of like doing level-4 hot yoga in the chamber of Tommy Chong’s bong” – WASHINGTON CITY PAPER

“Think of Hendrix playing with Sabbath without the vocals and add Cream’s sense of movement and thud… insanely gifted EARTHLESS: they’re a whole other thing in American power rock right now. They point a way that few will be able to follow” – ALL MUSIC

“Music so freewheeling that it begs to be slathered with hyperbole. You know, the usual ‘gamma rays of madness bashing your DNA into the Stone Age on laser fingers’ type of thing. EARTHLESS have massive chops” – STYLUS

HARSH TOKE to Release Debut LP

Psychedelic rockers HARSH TOKE explore sound and space through music. On the San Diego Acid Rock band‘s debut album Light Up and Live, loud, heavy guitars, swimming bass lines and smashing drums warp to full throttle, working together to launch the group’s “Haze Maze” of unapologetic psychedelic-blues into interstellar overdrive. Recorded by Brian Ellis (also of the prog-rock band ASTRA) and mastered by Carl Saff (Earthless, OFF!, Unsane), HARSH TOKE‘s Light Up and Live will be released on November 19 via Tee Pee.

Led by ripping pro skater and rip-roaring guitarist Justin “Figgy” FigueroaHARSH TOKE are equal parts atmospheric and anarchic, merging raging, blind fury musicianship with unprecedented white-knuckle volume abuse. Tense and surreal, HARSH TOKES‘ songs slowly build from hallucinatory haze into grand overtures of noise and feedback; a cosmic buffet of pounding, pummeling and punishing planes of sound. Heavy. Cosmic. Kinetic.
HARSH TOKE lay down sizzling grooves with every needle on the soundboard pinned to the red. If Blue Cheer could be called “Louder than God” in 1968, forty five years later, HARSH TOKE can easily be pegged as “Louder than Satan.” Run for your lives – into the din.
Tracklisting:
     1.) Rest in Prince (4:11)
2.) Weight of the Sun (14:28)
3.) Light Up and Live (9:46)
4.) Plug In to the Moon (10:08)
HARSH TOKE: Justin “Figgy” Figueroa (Guitar), Richie Belton (Bass), Austin “Buya” Ayub (Drums) and Gabe Messer (Keyboards).
Updated news and tour information available via ACTION! PR online (website / facebook / twitter)
“HARSH TOKE’s space-rock will take your mind on a cosmic journey through the rings of Saturn and back again.  They’ve transcended the plateau of time and space and their galactic forefathers from the ’70’s underground would be very proud to call them their own.  Inhale deep and take it down you sissy.” – FRONT

Scion A/V Releases Free Split EP Featuring EARTHLESS and WHITE HILLS

Scion A/V, the creative enterprise of Scion devoted to the discovery, nurture, funding and distribution of compelling music and arts programming released a special two track, 20 minute EP featuring the heavy sounds of San Diego cosmonauts EARTHLESS and Brooklyn astral rockers WHITE HILLS. Recorded in November, 2012 at the world famous Roxy in Hollywood as part of the Scion-presented Roadburn Records label showcase (that also featured Enslaved and Astra), the free EP features EARTHLESS performing the stargazing track Red and WHITE HILLS delivering the boundless cut Under Skin Or By Name. The EP is available as a free download now at ScionAV.com.

“Roadburn is an influential rock festival that is well respected internationally,” comments Jeri Yoshizu, manager of sales promotion for Scion. “We love what they do and wanted to be the first to bring Roadburn to the U.S.”

EARTHLESS was formed in 1991 by Mario Rubalcaba, Isaiah Mitchell and Mike Eginton with the desire to create music incorporating a wide array of influences ranging from diverse bands (from Flower Travelin’ Band, Jimi Hendrix and Hawkwind to The Birthday Party, Can and Rory Gallagher, to name a few) re-imagined and born to stand on its own. Described by Rubalcaba as a “heavy, loud, sonic mind melt,” the music of EARTHLESS features epic instrumental passages that have solidified the California trio as one of the must-see heavy psych rock bands on the planet today.

WHITE HILLS is guitarist Dave W., bassist Ego Sensation and drummer Nick Name. The New York group twists beauteous, brain-tenderizing riffs into tight spirals of sound that succeed through sheer momentum. Paying just as close attention to the quiet moments as the raging ones, WHITE HILLS’ songs are a push-pull between churning and floating, abandon and control. The end result is invigorating deep space rock that’s built to be performed (and experienced) live.

EARTHLESS/WHITE HILLS split EP track listing:

1.) EARTHLESS Red (12:31)
2.) WHITE HILLS Under Skin Or By Name (7:38)

BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA to Release New EP

BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA (photo C. Jenkins)

“Heavy Mental” psych rockers BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA will release The Storm Generation, their debut EP for Tee Pee Records on December 11. On The Storm Generation, thick, colorful bass lines coexist with flying reverb guitars, ethereal chants and loud, tribal drums. Produced by Scott Reeder (Kyuss, The Obsessed) in the Mojave desert, the EP features a guest appearance by Nobel Prize-nominated gonzo poet Ron Whitehead, adding even more color to BLAAK HEAT‘s signature psychedelia. The EP is a precursor to the band’s new full length The Edge of an Era, which is set for a March 26, 2013 release.

BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA‘s enticing blend of genres has been called “a dissonant symphony unveiling visions of great natural expanses” and is unlike anything you’ve likely heard before. The band’s transcendental tension between its heavy rock roots and an organic inclination to drift towards psychedelia pays homage to the vast collection of mind-expanding sounds the trio grew up on: neo-psychedelia, surf rock, spaghetti westerns, Middle Eastern scales and Far Eastern melodies.

“We spent all summer at our LA studio working on the new record,” comments BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA guitarist / vocalist Thomas Bellier. “The creative vibe was unbelievable, and the music just kept flowing. Soon we had way more than needed for a full-length record, so we talked to Tee Pee Records about doing an EP before the album, which they agreed to. The EP has something for everyone: hints of surf rock, massive basses, psych solos, shades of metal…it unleashes the uniqueness of the Blaak Heat sound.”
BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA collaborated with filmmakers Cole Jenkins and Andrew Baxter to document the recording of their new music alongside Reeder and the resulting five part behind-the-scenes videos have been posted online via The Obelisk. Check out the videos here (part 1part 2 / part 3 / part 4 / part 5).
Formed in 2008 in Paris, FranceBLAAK HEAT SHUJAA  promptly established itself as the ‘young Turks’ of European heavy psychedelia and boast a cinematic sound that has been called “Heavy Spaghedelia” featuring “psychedelic, meditative, trance-inducing” and “spacey atmospheres”. Now based in Los Angeles, the trio’s music has evolved into a hybrid of styles that is sure to find appeal to fans of Earthless, Kyuss, Naam, OM and Calexico.
BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA is:
Thomas Bellier (guitars, vocals), Mike Amster (drums) andAntoine Morel-Vulliez (bass).
Blaak Heat Shujaa - Let a thousand parks bloom

“The dominance of the psychedelic, meditative, trance-inducing, spacey atmospheres and an overall rather slow pace of the sound surely recall bands like Yawning Man, Naam, Dead Meadow, Earthless, Colour Haze and even Om (not to mention decades of acid psychedelic music produced across the Atlantic Ocean)… you find yourself instantly thrown onto a horse galloping in the desert while sunset is flashing the sky with red and purple shades against the black horizon made of table mountains and saguaros” – DOOMMANTIA

“amazing… If you like desert rock, psychedelic rock or bands such as Tool, Naam, Colour Haze or even Earthless, you’ll like Blaak Heat Shujaa” – HEAVY PLANET
