UNKIND Reveal New Album Details

Finnish hardcore heroes UNKIND revealed the album details for their upcoming sixth full-length entitled Pelon Juuret (Translation: Roots of Fear).

The album was recorded with producer Kari Nieminen at Noisecamp studios in Turku, Finland at the end of 2012. Pelon Juuret continues in the direction of the group’s previous work, offering up a furious fusion of d-beat hardcore crossed with a highly creative touch of atmospherics — as if Mogwai made a record of Tragedy covers or From Ashes Rise were influenced by Explosions In The Sky.

The album will be released on CD/LP/Digital via Relapse Records on July 9 in North America, July 8 in the UK/World, and July 5 in Germany, Benelux and Finland. A trailer for Pelon Juuret is available here while exclusive pre-order packages are available via Relapse here.

UNKIND previously released five full-length albums and a handful of vinyl-only releases.  The band’s catalog is available for streaming via their official Bandcamp page here.

EMPTY FLOWERS Elevate “Post-Rock” with New Single

EMPTY FLOWERS, the east coast post-rock band featuring current and former members of CABLE completed work on its sophomore album FIVE. The LP was recorded by Keith Souza and Seth Manchester at Rhode Island’s Machines with Magnets multimedia arts facility (Battles, Six Finger Satellite, The Body) and is the follow up to the group’s 2012 debut SIX which was called “immediate” by Pitchfork and earned Album of the Week honors at Stereogum. Teasing the release of FIVE, EMPTY FLOWERS just unveiled the brand new song, I Get to Know its Name, making the track available as a free download on its bandcamp page. Rock the surging song I Get to Know Its Name now at this location.

While an official release date for FIVE has yet to be determined, the album is expected this summer in all formats via The Path Less Traveled and Atomic Action! records. In keeping with the tradition EMPTY FLOWERS started last year, the band will be releasing remixes of some of the new material sporadically over the course of 2013. Confirmed remixes are in the works from artists and collaborators such as Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu), Jeff Caxide (Palms, ISIS) and more. Stay tuned!

Track listing:

1.) Five
2.) I Get to Know Its Name
3.) Lousy Phil
4.) Time Feeds the Dose
5.) Car Fires
6.) The Water
7.) Quit
8.) Trained Not to Worry

Stay tuned to the EMPTY FLOWERS Facebook page for breaking news and follow the band and read about the recording/making of FIVE on the group’s official blog.

EMPTY FLOWERS features Christian McKenna (vocals), Randy Larsen (bass), Bernie Romanowski (guitar) and Andre Galiffi (drums).

“Empty Flowers, a post-rock band featuring members of Doghouse/Hydra Head-related Conn. metalcore group Cable, are reminiscent of Girls Against Boys, Honor Roll, Lungfish, and other older acts, in the way they meld speak-sing vocals to slinky minimalist repetition” – PITCHFORK

“The giant, melting blue-white glacier on the front of Empty Flowers’ debut is a decent indication of what’s in store for your ear holes.. it’s enough to chill the air” – DECIBEL

“Connecticut post-rock outfit Empty Flowers have a reputation that transcends their status as a newly formed band, as Randy Larsen and Bernie Romanowski are members of metallic hardcore turned Southern sludge rock group Cable… the sparer, more precise sound of Empty Flowers often evokes the way that snowfall can simultaneously muffle and amplify sound” – EXCLAIM!

“In the way the band interlocks its splintered guitar-shards into heavy grooves, they recall Slint, or Polvo, or even Unwound. And in the way that frontman Christian McKenna floats his strained, piercing, mythic yelp over the band’s patient thud, I can’t help but compare them to Lungfish, a parallel I don’t mention lightly… they land in the same deep head-nod territory, and hearing a band so good at that sound gives the rare sensation of scratching an itch I didn’t know I had” – STEREOGUM

CASTLE Nominated For JUNO Award

Thrash-infused doom metallers CASTLE have been nominated for a Juno AwardCanada’s equivalent of a Grammy – in the “Metal/Hard Music Album Of The Year” category for their stunning work on the 2012 release Blacklands. The Juno Awards ceremony will be held on April 21 in Regina, Saskatchewan, where the band will compete against fellow nominees Cancer Bats, Devin Townsend Project, Ex Deo and Woods of Ypres.

CASTLE, originally conceived by guitarist, songwriter and producer Mat Davis as a solo project, turned a meeting of hearts into the formation of a band. After meeting his wife Elizabeth Blackwell, who would become the group’s vocalist and bassist, Davis also reached out to his longtime friend and musical collaborator Al McCartney from Toronto to play drums. The power trio released their debut album In Witch Order via German label Van Records in 2011; it was revered by the press, including being named Metal Hammer Norway’s “Album of the Year” in addition to leading the Roadburn Festival to name the band “Newcomer of the Year.”

The band recorded their latest album, Blacklands, at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, Calif. with producer Billy Anderson (EyeHateGod, Neurosis, Cathedral, Sleep). Released by PROSTHETIC RECORDS in September 2012. The group filmed music videos for three songs from the album: the title trackCorpse Candles and Storm Below The Mountain.

Shortly after the release of Blacklands, the band embarked on a Scion A/V-sponsored North American tour with Witch Mountain and recently completed their first-ever headlining U.S. tour, which featured drummer Rae Amitay (Mares of Thrace, Woods of Ypres, Thrawsunblat) filling in for McCartney. Following a performance at SXSW, CASTLE will embark on a Western U.S. tour, after which they will support Intronaut on a spring European tour that includes a performance at the prestigious Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Holland. Tickets and tour dates can be found on the band’s website: heavycastle.com
