KRAMPUS Release New Song Sampler

Italy‘s folk metal heroes KRAMPUS have posted a video interview with lead singer Filippo Gianotti. Fil answers some of the questions fans have sent in since the release of KRAMPUS’ new single “Paralysis”, which has received broad reactions and caused quite a bit of controversy among fans of both the band and the genre. Also included is a sneak peek of KRAMPUS’ upcoming second new song, which will again be free to download and share for everyone.

The band comments:

“You ask, we answer! Here’s a video interview with Fil, replying to some of the questions you’ve asked since the release of our new track “Paralysis”. Better still – enjoy a sneak peek of our next free song “Butterflies On Fire” at the end!”

KRAMPUS released a new track back in September. The song, along with almost a full album’s worth of material, was written mere months after the release of the band’s first full length album in 2012. Produced by Tommy Vetterli (Eluveitie, Coroner), “Paralysis”  breaks with the band’s musical past as well as genre conventions, while taking the combination of authentic folk instrumentation with modern metal a bold step further.

TYR Release New Single

Valkyrja, the seventh full-length album from the Faroe Islands natives, TÝR, will be released on September 17th in North America, and September 13th/16th in Europe/UK. After having unveiled the opening track on the album, the band has launched the second track, “Mare of My Night.” Stream the song new HERE.

 Vocalist/guitarist Heri Joenson comments:

Mare Of My Night was by far the most difficult song on the album to write, music wise. What I usually do is work on a basic idea, a melody with a chord progression. I make variations over the basic idea and then I pick out the best variations for the respective parts of the song, verse, chorus etc. For this one I had more variations than ever before and I made more versions of this song that I’ve ever done before, so it was very difficult to choose. I’m still not sure I made the best possible song, which is not a satisfying feeling at all. But there you have it.

As for the text, once I went to work on it, it was written in a day or two, in the evenings during studio time. I had the title and the story line long in advance. It’s based on the mare from folklore, the human-like creature that lies on top of you, riding you, causing bad dreams. As in nightmare, riding like a mare etc. Our anonymous viking, the protagonist of the story, finds in this song that his earthly woman has gone from being a goddess to being nightmare. It is also the most sexually explicit piece of lyric I have written so far.”

For Valkyrja, TýR collaborated with Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios in Ribe, Denmark. Along with Hansen, the band recruited acclaimed drummer George Kollias to act as studio drummer and Leaves’ Eyes vocalist Liv Kristine joined vocalist/guitarist Heri Joensen for a vocal duet on “The Lay of Our Love.”

The opening track to the album, “Blood of Heroes,” is streaming now at, where Valkyrja is also available for pre-order. Limited edition pre-order bundles are available that include TýR rune pendants, t-shirt, vinyl LP, and the CD.

About Valkyjra:
Valkyrja is a concept album with a story line based loosely around an anonymous Viking age warrior who leaves his woman and goes off to impress the Valkyrie on the battlefield so that she may bring him to Valhalla, or to Fólkvangr, the home of Freyja—the goddess associated with love, sexuality, beauty, fertility, gold, sorcery, war, and death. One can say the album is also indirectly about women and how they affect men and what men will do to impress and obtain women. Front man and founder Heri Joensen goes on to explain; “the woman that the warrior leaves may represent the earthly women. Freyja, The Lady Of The Slain, may represent the perfection of Women, and the Valkyrie is the link between the two, taking men from earthly to godly women.”

SCYTHIA Release Christmas Track

SCYTHIA (pictured from left to right): Morgan Zentner – Oboe of Death, Celine Derval – drums/vocals, Terry Savage – bass/vocals, Dave Khan – lead vocals/guitar

Canada’s favorite purveyors of folk/prog metal, Scythia are back once again with a re-mixed and re-mastered version of their holiday tune …Of Santa, a cheerful track about Santa and his brave reindeer!

…Of Santa – audio streams

In additional news, Scythia unleashed their latest music video Video Game Medley in support of their new EP For The Bear released early this fall.

metal video game medley by scythia

Following the success of their 2010 release …Of War and 2011 release …Of Exile, Scythia unleashed their 2012 scorcher, For the Bear, this fall.

The short, but sweet seven-track EP departs from the orchestration and central concept of its predecessors, instead representing a leaner, faster, sharper folk metal machine.

“The songs are faster, more exciting, heavier and straight to the point,” says vocalist/guitarist Dave Khan.

“There’s much less of the acoustic interludes and extensive progressive sections in favor of capturing the excitement of folk/power metal. The result is a more modern and conservative mix that showcases our ability to play rippin’ folk metal.

So what is Scythia?

Taking its name from Khan’s infatuation with a painting of Nordic/Russian warriors riding bears while brandishing swords, Scythia not only “gives the painting musical significance,” but it is also

“the name of an ancient empire spanning from the Caucasus through Russia and into Eastern Scandinavia,” says Khan.

After the tremendous out pouring of support for volume 1, you, the Axis Of Metal community have spoken loud and clear and they’ve answered the call, and countered with Volume 2. Volume 2 features more emerging artists, and is more encompassing of the metal world than the previous release.

Volume 2 will treat your eardrums to the thrashiest of metal, heinous black metal, putrid death metal, empowering traditional metal, methodical doom metal, boundary pushing progressive metal, the grooviest of groove metal, avant-garde madness, and bouncy folk metal among many other genres and incarnations of heavy sounds.

They’ve loaded their heavy metal shotgun and are discharging the most comprehensive of compilations to satisfy even the pickiest of nay-sayers and nitpickers.

If you’re wondering who crafted the sublime cover art, Axis Of Metal’s good friend Kartigan has stepped up to the plate and donated his time, effort, and patience and delivered the goods. If your band needs any sort of artwork, please don’t hesitate to contact him at: and they can put both parties into motion.
