UNKIND Reveal New Album Details

Finnish hardcore heroes UNKIND revealed the album details for their upcoming sixth full-length entitled Pelon Juuret (Translation: Roots of Fear).

The album was recorded with producer Kari Nieminen at Noisecamp studios in Turku, Finland at the end of 2012. Pelon Juuret continues in the direction of the group’s previous work, offering up a furious fusion of d-beat hardcore crossed with a highly creative touch of atmospherics — as if Mogwai made a record of Tragedy covers or From Ashes Rise were influenced by Explosions In The Sky.

The album will be released on CD/LP/Digital via Relapse Records on July 9 in North America, July 8 in the UK/World, and July 5 in Germany, Benelux and Finland. A trailer for Pelon Juuret is available here while exclusive pre-order packages are available via Relapse here.

UNKIND previously released five full-length albums and a handful of vinyl-only releases.  The band’s catalog is available for streaming via their official Bandcamp page here.

AXIS Artwork To Commemorate Golden Gods Awards

Celebrating the Golden Gods Awards that is to take place tonight, G-Pen commissioned renowned artist and musician, Axis to create an illustration that will honor musicians as they walk the black carpet.

AXIS (born March 26, 1973 in London, England) is a contemporary illustrator/working class fine artist who emerged from Los Angeles’ seminal graffiti scene in the 1980s. He is most noted for his convoluted and hyper-stylized freehand characters, and illustrations.

As a child, Axis moved from London to Los Angeles with his family and developed a number of musical and artistic influences including Mozart, Black Sabbath, Black Flag, Frank Frazetta, Rick Griffin, Norman Rockwell, and even Monty Python’s Flying Circus. An early convert to skateboarding and punk rock, Axis began experimenting with graffiti art in 1984, and joined L.A.’s legendary CBS Crew in 1988. By the mid-90s he had cemented his reputation as one of the most prolific street artists working in Los Angeles. Though his career has largely unfolded outside of the graffiti landscape, his skate-punk origins continue to shape his engorged aesthetic and politicized black humor.

In addition to his artwork, Axis is also widely known as a musician. Having played (harpsichord, cello, piano) since early childhood, Axis went on to form Los Angeles hard-core/Metal band The Pain (lead guitarist, songwriter) in 2004. He has recorded two full-length albums and has toured Europe and the United States

Axis lives in Los Angeles, California where he currently exhibits his paintings in some of the most respected Art Galleries, and Museums, and he continues to paint and play music everyday. Oh yes, and he skates when he can.

On our recent visit to Axis’ gallery, we were fortunate to get the full-blown tour by the legend himself. Here’s a small glimpse of what we got to see: http://www.grencoscience.com/blogs/news/7796211-axis-x-g-pen-commemorate-the-golden-gods

FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE Working On New Album Now!

Italian symphonic death metal act FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE is currently working on their third full-length with producer Stefano Morabito at 16th Cellar Studio.

Cristiano Trionfera (guitar, vocals) states:

“We are tracking guitars now, and the result is amazing… Stefano is nailing it and we know the album will sound incredibly powerful.”

For this album the band also used the precious collaboration of very talented guests, which gave a great contribution to make it a unique piece of art.

Tommaso Riccardi (guitar, vocals) commented:

“The concept of this album is based on the myth of the Labyrinth of Knossos and every character related to it. We focused on the philological aspect in order to represent all the elements of the classic world and, through a manic and meticolous research, we managed to create a metaphor with our times, as the maze can be associated with the endless search for what we really are. We’re sure you will be stunned by this as much as we are.”

Francesco Paoli (Drummer) adds:

“It’s difficult to recap in a few words all the elements contained in our new work, but we are sure this will absolutely be THE album for us. We have spent a lot of time composing these new songs and, even if recordings are not finished yet, we can firmly declare that this material is simply incredible, more mature and definitely a huge step forward from all our previous works. Epic complex harmony, sophisticated touching melodies, a true vocal aggression, photonic grooves and back to articulated riffing… these are just few things you will find in this album. It’s fucking quality music, you will see.”

The bands third album is due in August 2013 via Nuclear Blast records worldwide

CATHEDRAL Take Decibel Magazine Cover

UK doom legends, CATHEDRAL, will be releasing their final album, The Last Spire, on April 30. To celebrate the band’s storied career, CATHEDRAL has been featured on the cover of the May 2013 issue of Decibel Magazine. This issue is on newsstands now and includes a comprehensive interview with CATHEDRAL founder, Lee Dorrian. Dorrian, who also founded and runs Rise Above Records, discusses his time in Napalm Death, growing up in the UK metal scene, and the decision to put CATHEDRAL to rest. For more information, and to order a copy, head to decibelmagazine.com.

Recently, CATHEDRAL launched their final music video, Tower of Silence. The video was inspired by classic cult British film institutions such as “Amicus” and “Hammer House of Horror“, Tower of Silence was shot on location during the British Winter of 2012 at Gunnersbury Park Tower, London. It features a guest appearance from Purson’s Rosalie Cunningham, who places a symbolic black orchid on the tombstone of each member in the clips closing scenes. Directed by UK based Paraffin City Productions, Tower of Silence will be the last full production promo video ever made by this British doom metal institution.

GWAR’s DAVE BROCKIE Opens Print Art Webstore

The man behind the mask of Oderus Urungus, Dave Brockie, unveiled a new web-store where fans can buy limited-edition, high quality art prints of not only Brockie’s GWAR drawings, but many of his other illustrations. Culled from select images spanning a 30-year career as an artist and illustrator, these highly-collectable prints are now available to the public. Check out www.theartofdavebrockie.com

“For years I have been doing custom paintings and drawings for people and I have gotten so far behind that I constantly have to turn down people looking to get some of my work. A high-quality print line web store will give everybody a chance to have a Brockie on their wall” said the artist from their Richmond studio, AKA Slave Pit.

Dave Brockie is to many a footnote to the name most people know him by – that of Oderus Urungus, foul-mouthed alien barbarian and longtime lead singer of GWAR, the world’s foremost horror-rock spectacle. GWAR’s legendary live shows and relentless work-ethic have earned the group of artists and musicians from Richmond, Va. an international reputation as the cutting-edge of outrageous, “Grand Guignol”-style metal theater, and won them legions of fans worldwide. In the course of the groups 25+ year-long career Brockie, as President of Slave Pit Inc., GWAR’s parent production company, consistently spearheaded the group’s efforts, not only as the bands lead singer and public mouthpiece, but also as an artist involved in many of GWAR’s graphic projects.

Brockie continued on like the blowhard that he is.

“I actually graduated art school even though I knew it was no guarantee of employment. Nevertheless, I deluded myself that I was going to become a fine artist and was painting these giant squiggly blob paintings that actually looked pretty cool, but were never going to pay the bills. I worked construction and knocked over liquor stores to do that. But I was also into comics and illustration and when GWAR started to happen it gave me a great venue for my work. Suddenly I was being called upon to do flyers, t-shirts, comics…even album covers. That turned into a 25+ year stretch where I was always making art of some kind. It’s about damn time I had my own print line!”

The prints are signed and numbered by the artist and are part of a limited edition of 1000 per image. The prints use the highest quality paper and inks, and are mounted on a piece of masonite that features a custom-made 3-D frame that is a throwback to Brockie’s early “squiggle” paintings.

“I hope this is a big success,” said Brockie.

“I am going on a pilgrimage to Stalingrad this spring and need money for booze and food. Plus, I got kicked in the mouth by a circus-mule and need extensive dental-work. After I get this print site going, I plan to disappear. It is time for GWAR.”

In other Slave Pit news GWAR is wrapping up a new album, their 13th, which is the band’s first since the passing of longtime guitarist Cory Smoot in late 2011. Coming out later this year, the album features the debut of Pustulus Maximus, cousin of the mighty departed one, Flattus Maximus. The band has a run of shows scheduled for this April, which are the last stops of the “Fate or Chaos” tour, which chronicles GWAR’s epic struggle with an angry God. It has been rumored that GWAR will be testing out songs from the new album on these dates.

“Yes! We Will!” confirmed Oderus.

The band is also venturing into the culinary arts with a signature “GWAR-B-Q” sauce, which they will be debuting at a colossal “Meat & Meet” to be held at the world famous “Grinders” in Kansas City on Monday April 8 from 4-6 PM.

August will see the fourth annual GWAR-B-Q, the group’s annual outdoor music and meat-fest which is getting more massive every year. The new album’s release follows soon after, and then the band will embark on a mega-huge world tour that will continue well into 2014. Sounds like business as usual for the hardest working band in show biz.

THE OCEAN Unveil Another New Track

THE OCEAN unveiled Hadopelagic II: Let Them Believe, from their forthcoming new studio recording, Pelagial.

A progressive audio voyage written, recorded, and to-be-performed-live as one single 53-minute piece of music, Pelagial was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Witchcraft) at Fascination Street Studios in Orebro, Sweden, and firmly stands as THE OCEAN’s deepest, most challenging entry to their winding catalog of sound exploration. Pelagial will be released as a double CD, which includes both vocal and instrumental versions of the album, on April 26/29 (Europe) and April 30 (North America/world) through Metal Blade Records.

“My original plan was to write a stepless musical progression, like a continuous color blending from white to black,” relates guitarist Robin Staps, “but I soon realized that it could not be that linear. It needed to stay interesting after all, and this is something that is usually best achieved by employing unforeseeable elements. In the end, any good idea must be put into perspective by its musical impact.” And so the listener will experience swirls and vertical currents while listening to the album; short, unexpected faster passages in between, sudden tempo changes that will make them feel like they’re rising again for a short bit – but the general direction remains very clear: ‘You can feel from the beginning, it’s going down. Deeper and deeper.”

Submerse yourself in ninth movement Hadopelagic II: Let Them Believe here.

Additionally, pre-orders are currently available for a very special acrylic box set edition of Pelagial, released through Pelagic Records. These heavy acrylic boxes are still available in CD format (the vinyl edition is now sold out) and contain the CD digipak as well as an extra DVD with the Pelagialmovie by Craig Murray, all of which will be “buried” underneath five thick acrylic layers, colored in different hues of blue, each layer reflecting one of the five pelagial depth zones. The layers will be silk-screen printed with additional artwork by Martin Kvamme. Claim your copy now at: http://www.theoceancollective.com/pelagial.

And for those who missed it, fourth track – Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams – is currently streaming at the band’s Official Metal Blade Page where you’ll also find studio footage and pre-order info.
