ABORYM Premiere ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ Cover

Extreme electro/industrial metallers ABORYM revealed the first track from the second CD of the upcoming Dirty double album. While the first CD will feature completely new material, the second CD will include two completely re-arranged and re-recorded tracks from previous albums, covers of tracks by Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd and Nine Inch Nails, as well as a previously unreleased track. Dirty (cover below), the brand new double album which will be available in jewel case, double digipack and gatefold double LP formats, is set for release on Agonia Records on May 28 in Europe and June 11 in North America.

Iron Maiden’s heavy metal classic Hallowed Be Thy Name by legendarny industrial troops ABORYM, can be streamed here: http://youtu.be/1oSUZS-CnII

The band has also unveiled the second video teaser for Dirty. It’s streaming at: http://youtu.be/2Qn4gqZOJOc

ABORYM started life as a cover band and went through several transformations, eventually pioneering what the band calls hard-industrial-electro extreme metal. Today’s line up consists of Italians Fabban on vocals, bass and Synths and Paolo Pieri (Hour Of Penance) on guitars, keyboards and programming, together with Norway’s Bard “Faust” Eithun (Blood Tsunami, Mongo Ninja, ex-Emperor) on drums.

Dirty was recorded at the Fear No One Studios in Italy with Emiliano Natali, reprising his Sound Engineers role from the band’s Psychogrotesque album, and it is helmed by Marc Urselli of New York’s Eastside Sound Studio who has worked with the likes of Mike Patton and Lou Reed. The electronic part of the album is engineered by D. Loop (Kebabtraume, Limbo). R.G. Narchost (Stormcrow, Demon’s Shade, Drowning Ashes) created “The Spiral shaped chamber” custom sounds library for the band. Artwork for the album is by ABORYM’s Fabban.

With Dirty being the band’s first release since 2010’s Psychogrotesque, all three musicians have something to say about it:

Guitarist Paolo Pieri commented:

“This is definitely the most schizoid and experimental ABORYM work so far. This time we focused on pushing the boundaries of electronic music one step forward while retaining the ruthless brutality of extreme metal in a way totally ahead of the times.”

Drummer Bard “Faust” Eithun added:

“This time around ABORYM push everything further; the electronic and industrial elements have never been so present. Rest assured, no matter how sick, twisted and beyond everything it sounds, it is still ABORYM.”

The last word falls to founder Fabban:

“I believe that Dirty represents the best material ever written by ABORYM from 1992 until today. Given that it wasn’t that easy to go beyond an album such as Psychogrotesque, I strongly believe that this time we did exceed every limit and every concept of experimentation – manipulating all the clichès of extreme metal, industrial or electronic music and pushing together elements that are so far away from each other. As a result, we achieved something really innovative, powerful, refined and of a really high standard. The quality of sounds, the nuances, the details passing through the recording quality; the quality of the machines that we used and abused, the quality of the lyrics, the artwork and the performances of each of us and of all the people who have worked with us, are definitely all at the top. Dirty is a record that simply expands the range of our listeners, it’s an album that everyone can enjoy and really appreciate. I am personally very excited and, at the same time, really proud of what you’ll soon be able to listen to. We worked so hard for the past two years on this double album that we have no words to really explain how excited we are to finally see it released. It’s an album that will further change the history of extreme music. Of that I have no doubt.”

RECOVERY COUNCIL Album Release Party

Rebeca Qualls is a geek. The guitarist/vocalist and chief songwriter for New Jersey-based rock trio RECOVERY COUNCIL has a unique background which includes, of all things, scientific systems engineering. And she’s crazy enough to think that the two have something in common.

Writing music is, in many ways, the organic distillation of thoughts, feelings, and melodies into a cohesive end product, Qualls says.

Like building a system, creating music can take a few iterations to sharpen and guide that focus into a desired result.

This concept also parallels the evolution of RECOVERY COUNCIL from a lo-fi space rock solo project into a heavy rock trio with an undeniable sonic chemistry.

Qualls raucous guitar and honest vocals have been joined by the fluid, vibrant bass of Isidro Santos, and precision drumming of Jeff Trenholm. The third RECOVERY COUNCIL album Plan-Do-Check-Act consistently captures a moment in time where the three musicians with unique styles perfectly intersect as a cohesive whole. Although she cites some post-punk influences such as Husker Du, Sonic Youth, and Helmet, Qualls has deep rock and metal roots dating back to her childhood in the small college/steel town of Huntington, West Virginia.

A young classical pianist turned bassist, she found her bass gods and musical influences in the likes of Iron Maiden, early Metallica, and Rush. The latter also made a big impact on New Jersey native Trenholm in his formative years, in addition to The Cure and Pink Floyd.

Meanwhile, Dominican Republic-born Santos found his niche in early-mid 90s rock, including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, and Toque Profundo from his home country.

The end result is a hurricane of melodic power whirling around the eye of Qualls smooth vocals and whipping into gusts of heavy 90s-style indie rock with traces of metal and a dash of progressive.

Plan-Do-Check-Act is RECOVERY COUNCIL’s first studio release as a band, and for Rebeca Qualls, it’s a place she’s always wanted to be.

While you can bring energy to recording and playing solo, it isn’t the same as having the raw, organic power of a band around you. Besides, I suck at drums.

In all seriousness, I’m really thankful to be surrounded by such talented musicians who are equally great friends. I’m continually amazed at the instant life they breathe into the music. I’ll bring in a song, and it will seem to congeal in no time because we get each other musically and we have a blast playing together. Then well goof around, tell bad jokes, talk about all kinds of stuff, and keep each other pretty entertained. We’re all kind of quirky in our own ways, but somehow I think I’ve earned the title of the biggest geek of the bunch.

Quirks aside for the moment, while Plan-Do-Check-Act reflects the process by which RECOVERY COUNCIL has evolved, it also has a personal meaning to Qualls. Her lyrics string together to loosely tell a story of perseverance through struggle and disillusionment, while balancing expectations based on real values as opposed to unattainable ideals.

The will to accomplish something against any odds comes with highs, lows, assessments and reassessments along the journey. It’s as much about self-discovery and experience as it is about determination and improvement, Qualls says.

Such is the journey for RECOVERY COUNCIL the musical system that has been engineered, focused, and refined over time. The only way to move is forward. And the geeks shall inherit the earth.

RECOVERY COUNCIL Premiere First Single

Geek chicks sure can rock out and Rebeca Qualls is living proof. New Jersey-based RECOVERY COUNCIL began as Qualls’ nerdy lo-fi space rock solo project in grad school but has evolved into a power trio juggernaut with a heavy rock nucleus and a new album Plan-Do-Check-Act to be released January 15 on Dot Ultra Records.

Album Due Out January 15 on Dot Ultra Records

Plan-Do-Check-Act is RECOVERY COUNCIL’s third full-length studio album but the first release since becoming a full band in the summer of 2011. While the band’s sound has taken a more raucous turn, Qualls continues to exude her inner geek with lyrical introspect and technical allusion.
