Metal Blade Records Announce New MONTE PITTMAN Album

The Power of Three, the upcoming full-length album from award winning, chart topping guitarist, MONTE PITTMAN is set for release on January 21, 2014 through Metal Blade Records.

The first single, ‘A Dark Horse‘, is currently streaming at metalblade.com/montepittman where fans can also check out the first of five demonstration videos filmed at Orange Amplification‘s studios where Monte filmed a series of high quality videos demonstrating ALL Orange Amplification products.

‘A Dark Horse’, the first single from Monte’s third album, reflects Monte’s return to his metal roots while demonstrating his Orange gear sound and tone to perfection. Flemming Rasmussen, famous for Metallica’s seminal album ‘Master Of Puppets’, produced the album, The Power Of Three, which is hard and heavy and follows on from Monte’s highly successful, critically acclaimed second album Pain, Love & Destiny, which reached number one in both the rock and pop charts.

Artist Cam Rackam created the artwork for the cover of The Power of Three. The piece features a portrait of Charon, the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. This represents Monte’s musical journey from what he has done before and where he is now with The Power of Three and beyond.

The first single ‘A Dark Horse’ is also available now as an iTunes single HERE and features artwork created by Gustav Klimt (used with kind permission) titled ‘The Golden Knight (Life Is A Struggle)’. It is a textured, symbolic painting which tells a similar story as the music does.

Tracklisting:
1. A Dark Horse
2. Delusions of Grandeur
3. Everything’s Undone
4. Blood Hungry Thirst
5. On My Mind
6. Away from Here

About Monte Pittman:
Born and raised in Longview, TX, Monte Pittman made the decision at 24 to move to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a professional musician, and unfortunately having to leave his family, friends, and band Myra Mains behind. Upon arrival in LA, he made ends meet by working at a local music store. Realizing he was better at teaching than selling, he left to start providing guitar lessons.

As fate would have it, his third student would end up being British filmmaker Guy Ritchie, who had just received a guitar from his then girlfriend, Madonna. Soon after, Monte was introduced to the iconic performer, and became her guitar teacher as well. A month later, Monte was invited to join Madonna on stage at the David Letterman Show to promote her album, “Music.”

Monte has since played guitar on all of Madonna’s live tours and albums, starting with the 2001 Drowned World Tour, and shares writing credits on some of her songs. Monte has also played guitar for the band Prong. He is credited with co-writing songs on “Scorpio Rising” and “Power of the Damager” to which he also added backing vocals and bass. He also played guitar on Prong’s live album “100% Live.”

In November 2009, Monte released his debut acoustic solo album, “The Deepest Dark.” Almost a year after its release, a special bonus version of “The Deepest Dark” was released and immediately reached the No. 1 spot on the Best-Selling Acoustic Albums list at CD-Baby.com. It was also No. 9 in the Top 10 Best-Selling CDs for the Fall of 2010. In 2011, Monte launched a Kickstarter campaign for his second album, “Pain, Love & Destiny”. It raised a staggering $65,500, making him the top rock musician to raise the most money on the crowd-funding platform at that time. Monte met his initial goal of $5,000 in under 24 hours. It was released later that year and within its first week made it to No. 1 Rock Album, No. 1 Pop Album, and made it onto the Top 10 Albums chart on CD Baby. In addition, it cracked the iTunes Top 200.

Monte performed at the 2012 Super Bowl with Madonna and toured around the world on the MDNA Tour. He also performed at the 2012 Artists In Music Awards where he was given an award for Best Solo Artist in addition to being nominated in four other categories. Monte has also been honored with a Career Achievement Award from the Hollywood F.A.M.E. Awards. The Los Angeles Music Awards nominated him for Best Male Singer/Songwriter and Best Modern Rock Album for “Pain, Love, & Destiny”.

In November of last year, “M.P.3: The Power Of Three, Pt. 1” was released. It’s a stripped down acoustic EP marking the beginning of Monte and Flemming Rasmussen’s working relationship.

In 2013, Pittman, along with band members Kane Ritchotte on drums and Max Whipple on bass, went to Copenhagen to record the upcoming album with producer Flemming Rasmussen. This marks Monte’s return to heavy music.

RIVERS OF NIHIL Post Album Samples with Song Concepts

Rivers of Nihil’s debut album, “The Conscious Seed of Light,” will be released on October 15 in North America. The album was recorded in March of 2013 at Mana Recording Studios in Florida with famed metal producer/musician Erik Rutan. While The Conscious Seed of Light is not necessarily a concept album traditionally speaking, Rivers of Nihil began this project with the idea that they would release four separate albums tied together with one common theme: each reflecting a particular season of a year.

Bassist Adam Biggs elaborates;

The Conscious Seed of Light is intended to be representative of Spring and explores various themes concerning new beginnings, growth, and an attachment to the natural world in a post-human Earth. Unlike some concept records however, we wanted to allow each song to work on its own terms. Rather than have the songs rely on each other to move a specific story structure forward; they work within their own separate narratives, but ultimately serve the album’s broader concept.”

Now, fans can stream a video with audio samples of each track on the album at metalblade.com/riversofnihil. Below, Adam Biggs elaborates on the concepts behind each track on the record. Rivers of Nihil‘s lineup is rounded out by vocalist Jake Dieffenbach, drummer Ron Nelson, and guitarists Jon Kunz and Brody Uttley. The band will be on tour beginning thisFriday, October 4 with Beneath the Massacre. On October 26, the band will join Dying Fetus for the final portion of their headlining tour.

The Conscious Seed of Light Track by Track Rundown

1. Terrestria I: Thaw
As some of you may or may not know by now, “The Conscious Seed of Light” is something of a concept record. Now, does that mean that the record is one solid connected piece of music with a definite plot structure and easily identifiable characters? No. No it does not. What it does mean is that each individual song serves, to some end, a similar thematic purpose. That being said; this record is the first of four, each representing a different season, “The Conscious Seed of Light” is our “spring” album. We figured this would be an appropriate place to begin seeing that spring is often associated with new life, and new beginnings, not unlike the new beginning given to us with our first major release. Now, all of that aside, we have “Terrestria I: Thaw,” our introductory track. It starts with an unassuming buildup that leads into a fun 8th note feeling that we don’t use a whole hell of a lot, and it blends very well into next track. When I presented the idea of this song to Brody I really didn’t give him much to go on, but I think he really knocked it out of the park.

2. Rain Eater
This was the first track we wrote for the album, before Metal Blade so graciously entered the picture, before we actually knew we were writing a full-length release. This song went through a ton of changes, in particular, we kept adding onto the beginning of the track (I think it originally started at about the one minute mark). But this sort of thing happens a lot when we write as a group, and this is one of very few songs written for the record that were done in this way. I think you can hear a lot of us using what had worked in our older material within the confines of this song in a structural sense, and it really comes together in a gratifying way.

Lyrically, this song is probably some of my most personal work. I did it very quickly and naturally, and like a lot of the lyrics I write I didn’t really understand what it was about until way after it was finished. It’s about a man who achieves a deep connection with the planet by repenting for his human sins and planting himself in the ground and beginning new life as a tree. I have a feeling this song will be synonymous with our band for quite some time.

3. Birth of the Omnisavior
This song is an old favorite from our second ep that we decided just NEEDED the Rutan touch. There are a ton of small details to be gleaned off of each instrumental performance within this song because we’ve all had so much time to tweak everything just the way we wanted it, in that way it definitely has the benefit of age. “Birth” is something of an outlier on this record; it has an ultra-progressive/untraditional song structure and no real defined chorus section. This song has been a part of our live set list for a long time now and I doubt it’s going away any time soon, we all just have so much fun playing it.

4. Soil & Seed
One of the biggest stylistic departures on the record, Soil & Seed is a real beast of a track. Riff wise, it’s super easy to play when you consider some of the fret board gymnastics on the rest of the album, but there’s nothing quite like seeing the eager, mosh-happy faces of a crowd when we go into that stomp riff in the middle section. Even though the track features a vocal section of my very own, the lyrics are actually completely Jake Dieffenbach’s doing, and they’re some of my favorite we’ve ever had. There’s a sense of quiet malice behind a lot of these zen-centric lines and I just love that sort of duality in death metal.

5. Central Antheneum
This song was probably my favorite throughout the entire writing process, it’s a real sleeper if you ask me. The song has a half-time feel all the way through which is something we almost never toy with, it makes good use of our stupidly low tuning, there’s a cool hook and a really fun middle section. My favorite part of this song though has to be Brody’s use of melodic lead lines placed sporadically in the song to give the riffs the right texture, that sort of thing always takes a song to the next level. Oh and it’s really heavy.

6. Mechanical Trees
This song was sort of the first of a kind for us. It was the product of Brody and I assembling the basic song structure in Cubase and making a working demo of the song before we’d even attempted playing it together as a band, which is something that we’d never done up to that point. A lot of the riffs have a really open-ended, spacey feel too which is a departure from our usual claustrophobic riffing style. The lyrics paint a bleak picture of humanity’s future, wherein the environment has become so damaged that we are forced to rely on machines to create breathable oxygen for most living creatures. Eventually, this way of life becomes too much for Earth’s dwindling human population, so the powers that be lace the machines with hallucinogenic substances to ease the pain of death.

7. Place of Serpents
This song is equal parts shred and feeling…well maybe it tips slightly more toward shred, but there’s still plenty of feeling to be had here. In demo form this song was sort of an exercise in minimalism. There were very few harmonies, the bass and drums were super simple and there wasn’t much layer work going on. The version heard on the record is pretty much the polar opposite of that however; it’s a very dense song with a lot going on. There’s even a pretty large section that puts Brody and Jon’s post-rock leanings on display. Combine all of that with lyrics about tribal religious ceremonies and you have a song that you pick something new from in each listen.

8. Human Adaptation
Another one we pulled out of the vault. This song was part of our first ep and was actually the first song we ever put out for people to hear back in 2009. We sort of felt an obligation to this song’s history which was a big reason for its inclusion on our Metal Blade debut, but also it’s just a fierce bastard of a tune. This one is what really laid the groundwork for what this band would end up being; fast, complex, heavy and with an emphasis on hook-driven song structures.

9. A Fertile Altar
Musically, this song is a bit of a nod to all of our old-school death metal influences. It’s kind of a more straight-forward head banger with a bridge part perfect for fist pumping and all-round pit brutality. The lyrics were inspired by the disgusting cult actions of Warren Jeffs and his FLDS church in the early 2000’s. Jeffs gained notoriety for controlling the lives of families involved with his sect and preying on their children. However, I always envisioned this song to be spoken from the point of view of a wolf. Again, I really enjoy adding a layer of dualism within these songs.

10. Airless
Brody put this song together pretty much start to finish after we thought the writing process was pretty much over for this record. When we all heard the song it went without saying that this was going to be the album ender. It lacks a definite, rigid song structure in favor of acting as a sort of dark and ominous soundscape. There’s a little bit of odd-timing instrumentation here, a good bit of open space and Mr. Uttley leaves us with some really emotional guitar work.

The lyrics are reflective of that mood, there’s a lot here that deals with change and the uncertainty of life. It serves as a way to move into the summer album. The basic message is that you can cling to a feeling, an idea, a season, a way of life for so long but ultimately everything comes to an end.

GWAR Endorse Super Bowl Halftime Show Petition

After a week and over 35,000 signatures, Antarctic overlords GWAR finally have officially reacted to the petition started by Jeff Cantrell of Morehead, Kentucky on Change.org to have GWAR play the Super Bowl Halftime Show.  The petition can be signed at Change.org/GWARBOWL.

“It has long been the joy of GWAR to submit the human race to any number of hideous tortures, and I can’t think of anything more horrible than you having to watch acts like The Black-Eyed Peas and Bruno Mars perform. So the temptation to ignore this is great! But then you start thinking about all of the people that who have never experienced GWAR before, and will be forced to do so if we do get the gig, well, at that point my colossal mega-ego kicks in and I am all over it.”

After a long and wet fart, Oderus continued…

“I really don’t think we should be limited to playing the halftime show… I am offering GWAR as an actual team that could complete in the NFL. Think of the titanic struggle involved as the NFL submits their best players, hell, we could play against all the teams at once and still emerge victorious. For too long has the NFL ignored the obvious fact that the players should be naked, blind-folded and armed with battle axes, that land mines should litter the field and whalers should hurl harpoons randomly from the stands. GWAR is throwing our entire cosmic weight (and we are fairly hefty) behind this petition, and command all of our followers, their families, and indeed anybody who has ever existed to sign this fucking thing, and in fact for those who have already signed it to create multiple fake email addresses and sign it again!”

And now to top it all off, today GWAR is ready to bring everyone a little holiday cheer with a select number of shows this December. That’s right it’s Christmas Time with Santa Oderus.  These three shows are set for December 27 in New York at Irving Plaza, December 28 in New Haven, CT at Toad’s Place and finally a show in Richmond, VA on December 29 at The National.  Tickets for all three shows go on sale this Friday.

In support of Battle Maximus, GWAR will be heading out this fall on the “Madness at the Core of Time” tour. The tour, which features a completely brand-new show full of slavering creatures and deserving victims, is set to kick off October 2 in Columbus, Ohio and runs through November 17 in Washington, DC. GWAR shall be joined by deathcore heavyweights and label-mates Whitechapel, Richmond, VA thrashers Iron Reagan (featuring Municipal Waste singer Tony Foresta) and A Band of Orcs (who are actually a band of Orcs).

The title track from Battle Maximus is streaming HERE.

Metal Blade Records Sign DESTRAGE from Milan, Italy

Metal Blade Records is proud to announce the signing of Italian metal act, Destrage. The band formed in 2005 and has released two full length albums, “Urban Being” in 2009, and “The King is Fat’N’Old” in 2010. Their animated live shows have taken them on tour all over Europe, and even over to Japan. Destrage opened for Every Time I Die and Parkway Drive this summer, and headlined a variety of Italian festivals including: Machete Fest, Rock In Riot, MAV Festival, and more.

Destrage’s new album, “Are You Kidding Me? No.” is complete and being prepared for release in early 2014. A trailer for the album can be seen now on the band’s popular youtube channel, youtube.com/destrage. While there, watch Destrage’s previous videos, including their video for “Jade’s Place,” which won the video clip category at the Torino Best Soundtrack Awards in 2010. Plans are currently in motion for videos in support of the new album, as well as more extensive touring in 2014.

Destrage comments on joining the Metal Blade roster:

“It’s quite difficult for us to describe in few words our feelings about this moment. We just signed with one of the most important and historical metal label in the world, being welcomed as members of a big family, this is simply amazing! We’ve listened to Metal Blade artists since we were just fresh-faced kids and now we’re stoked to be part of such a great roster. We are really excited for the upcoming release and we can’t wait to bring this work on stage and tour around as much as we can. See ya all very soon!”

BELOW In Studio with Andy La Rocque

Epic doom metal band, BELOW, are currently hold up at Sonic Train Studios in Sweden with none other than Andy La Rocque (King Diamond) recording their Metal Blade Records debut. BELOW, hails from Sweden and music has influences from late Black Sabbath, Candlemass, and King Diamond, so going with Andy La Rocque as the producer was a clear choice for the group. The band offered up the following update:

“The progress of the recording of our debut album is going great and to have the opportunity to work with Andy La Rocque and Olof in Sonic Train Studios is amazing. We are currently finished recording the drums, the bass and the main guitars, and will start with the vocals this weekend. It sounds amazing already. It will be a truly epic album that will leave its mark in the history of doom.”

Producer and legendary King Diamond guitarist Andy La Rocque added;

“this is one of the heaviest bands I have worked with in the studio for a very long time, and the sounds so far is amazing! And always great to work with great musicians!”

Not much is known about the Swedish quintet, however they are working with Tobias Rosén—bass player of fellow Metal Blade Records artists Noctum—of Howlin’ Owl Productions and a split 7″ is in set to be released by Dark Descent Records with the doom act’s full-length being released via Metal Blade in 2014.
