THE OCEAN Triple DVD Slated for December Release in North America

THE OCEAN‘s highly anticipated triple-DVD release, “Collective Oblivion,” will be released one month later than originally planned. Fans will be able to buy their copies in stores and on-line on Decmber 10th. Until then, the DVD/t-shirt bundle is still available via Indiemerch HERE. Additionally, THE OCEAN’s European tour with Shining, Tides From Nebula, and Hacride began yesterday and will be the final tour featuring drummer Luc Hess and Jona Nido.

And update from THE OCEAN:

“As most of you will already know by now, Luc and Jona are leaving the band at the end of this tour. They have given us fair notice of their departure in June this year, so that we would have enough time to find replacements.”

Luc Hess comments:

“I’m getting to this point where i feel like everything I could bring to this band, i already have. And everything I learned music-wise from it can’t go any further. This is a tough decision, but i’ve been thinking this through since a while already. I have no regrets at all, it was most certainly one of the best experiences I’ve ever lived, and I am more than happy we’ve been through this together. I feel very thankful and grateful that you guys trusted me and shared these moments over the last 5 years.”

jonaJona Nido comments:

“There are obviously a ton of reasons for that to happen now. These include artistic divergence, full-time commitment to a project that isn’t 100% fulfilling anymore and other stuff like not wanting to deal with certain aspects/restrictions of what an established/touring act requires for its production and also the way things are generally working, especially on a personal level.”

Robin Staps continues:

“These guys have dedicated the time of their lives to playing live with this band, and I am grateful for sharing what has always been essentially my own vision of this band with me for almost 6 years. Jona has written great songs for “Anthropocentric”, and Luc has coined and personalized the sound of this band with his hard-hitting, creative approach to drumming. But over the past 2 years of intense touring, we have grown apart as musicians and as people, and it has gotten to a point where it was unfulfilling for everyone involved.

“A divorce usually hurts, but it always also opens up new horizons. We are happy to announce that Paul Seidel will be the new drummer in The Ocean. Paul is currently playing in War From A Harlot’s Mouth, who are going on indefinite hiatus at the end of the year, as well as in Dioramic and Wassbass. He also gives drum lessons in Berlin and knows from the experience with his own bands what it’s like to tour America, Europe and Australia. To get a taste of Paul’s drumming, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaX1KWPtHLg

“This clip only represents a small fraction of Paul repertoire and abilities. We have only had 3 rehearsals with Paul so far, but it has clicked from the beginning both on a musical and personal level. I would have never thought that I could find another drummer who plays at the same level as Luc, but now I am sure that Paul will not only follow in Luc’s footsteps, but also stray from the path and bring new, exciting things to the table. I always knew that Paul was a machine who wouldn’t struggle with fast stuff like in ‘Disequilibrated’ or ‘The Wish In Dreams’, but watching him enjoy playing some of the slow and calm songs with so much feeling and energy really made me aware of how awesome and versatile a drummer he really is. Paul was the only drummer we auditioned, and after we did, there was no desire to try out anyone else.”

Paul Seidel adds:

“I’m very pleased to officially announce, that I’ll be joining forces with THE OCEAN. I am glad, both musically and on a personal scale, to walk new paths and broaden my horizon. My personal approach has always been to overcome genre boundaries as well as stereotypes, to swim against the current and to play or enjoy music apart from conventional habits. THE OCEAN have ever since implemented a conceptual urge in the context of progressive music and have never been afraid to dare to experiment. Therefore, I am more than looking forward to getting creative and contribute my part to the art of THE OCEAN.”

THE OCEAN Streams Full Chapter from Triple-Disc DVD

On the heels of three long months of touring (North America, Asia, Russia) in support of their latest album, Pelagial, THE OCEAN have launched the entire ‘China’ chapter of their highly anticipated Collective Oblivion triple DVD.

THE OCEAN main man Robin Staps comments:

“I can’t believe that this is finally… finished. We all kind of lost hope along the way, as the project totally grew out of proportion over the last 2 years. Originally we only wanted to film one single show, and by June 2012 we were sitting on top of a pile of 28 terabytes of data filmed across the globe during 2 full years. Countless live shows, interviews, crazy parties on Russian trains and funny moments in Chinese pharmacies. But then the worst part began: editing, choosing, compiling, structuring, which took another year. Now it’s done, for real! And I can safely say that you will be hard-pressed to find any other band DVD that is equally extensive, hilarious, profound and compelling, as this one. Everything you ever wanted to know about this band, from the early days until now… the answer is here! And a lot of things you didn’t wanna know as well…”

Excerpt From THE OCEAN DVD Now Playing

Revolver Magazine is pleased to reveal an excerpt from THE OCEAN‘s Pelagial DVD. The dramatic DVD, which is being screened as live video projections during the band’s current Pelagial world tour, is a conceptual movie by Craig Murray, known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, Converge, etc. This movie, which offers up a year’s worth of meticulous shooting, cutting and editing, visualizes the journey into the depths and completes the holistic music and visual art project that defines the Pelagial concept. The film is inundated with spectacular oceanic footage, parts of which THE OCEAN‘s own Robin Staps, an avid scuba diver, filmed himself in Australia. In addition, Pelagial features a female protagonist (who ironically goes by the name “Arielle” in real life). The girl is seen enduring various stages of fear, lust, terror, pain and joy, as she sinks towards the inscrutable depths of the Hadopelagic zone at the end of the album, and metaphorically, deeper and deeper into the depths of her own psyche.

Comments Robin Staps:

The album concept follows two separate but related strains: One is the obvious journey from the surface towards the depths of the sea, crossing the five Pelagial depth zones. The second one is loosely based on Andrey Tarkowsky’s movie Stalker, which is also a journey through zones, but an inward journey, form the surface into the depths of the human psyche, towards the origins of our wishes and desires. This is the central theme that the lyrics of the album are orbiting around. The Pelagial movie takes up themes from and makes reference to both of these conceptual strains, and fuzes them together, in an abstract, artistic way.”

The Pelagial DVD comes with a 5:1 Dolby surround mix of the instrumental album and is currently only available along with the special limited edition acrylic box set versions of the album, which were released through the band’s own Pelagic Records, on both CD and 4×10″ vinyl formats, in April. These special acrylic boxes contained the CD digipak or the two vinyl gatefolds respectively; which were “buried” underneath five thick, silk-screen printed acrylic layers colored in different hues of transparent blue, again reflecting the individual pelagic depth zones. The vinyl box sets sold out within nine days in February 2013, by direct preorder only. A second edition, including a repress of the vinyl on three-color split wax, will be made available for preorder shortly, and released in December through Pelagic Records. The CD box sets are still available through http://www.pelagic-records.com/cds.

Check out the stunning excerpt from the DVD in the form of the instrumental version of “Bathyalpelagic III: Disequillibrated,” now playing courtesy of Revolver at THIS LOCATION.

THE OCEAN‘s wildly successful Pelagial full-length was released earlier this year via Metal Blade. Their most profound work to date, Pelagial is a 53-minute exploratory composition written, recorded, mixed and intended to-be-performed-live as one single piece of music. Centered around all five pelagic depth zones, Pelagial purposefully submerges its listeners into an aquatic journey that is at once tranquil and terrifying. Crowned “ambitious and textured” by Terrorizer and “brilliantly written, expertly executed and filled with the kind of songwriting most bands can only dream of,” by Crave, Pelagial entered the Billboard Heatseekers Chart at #10 upon its first week of release and continues to reap critical accolades from fans and critics globally. The OCEAN is currently in the last stages of a three-month world tour promoting Pelagial, which included North America, Taiwan, China, and currently Russia.

Stay tuned for further THE OCEAN missives in the weeks to follow.

THE OCEAN Roadside Update – 7/31/2013

THE OCEAN are currently making their way through North America as part of the seventh annual Summer Slaughter Tour. Presented by Indie Merch Store, ESP and Guitar World, the progressive sound contortionists are leveling stages nightly alongside The Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, Revocation, Aeon and more.

Founding guitarist Robin Staps comments of the trek:

“Summer Slaughter has been a blast so far… we struggled with some technical issues in the beginning and, and finding a setup/routine that works within those 10 minutes changeovers wasn’t easy, but we’re there now, and have been thoroughly enjoying the past few shows. More good stuff to come!”

THE OCEAN have added a number of last minute US headlining shows on the Summer Slaughter off days which include performances in Hartford, Omaha and Vancouver as well as a very special meet & greet on August 6 in Brooklyn, New York at Saint Vitus Bar.

Elaborates Staps:

“On August 6th, we will all be hanging out at Saint Vitus bar in Brooklyn, where we played a great show in 2011 with support from Pelagic Records recording artists Family, and The Binary Code, as some of you may remember. We are stoked to see these two awesome bands perform at Saint Vitus Bar again, as well as Black Table. Rumors have it that there is this band called ‘Pelagial’ playing as well, we’re very curious to find out what that is all about… we will all be there to sign whatever stuff you bring, preferably foreheads, melons or live animals, so come say hi if you’re from the NYC area!”

Following the band’s stateside takeover, THE OCEAN will play select shows throughout Taiwan, China and Russia before embarking upon a full European headlining tour set to commence on October 29, 2013. Support will come by way of Norway’s Shining, Poland’s Tides From Nebula and France’s Hacride. See all confirmed dates below.

In related news, THE OCEAN recently launched a brand new video for “Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams” from their most recent album, Pelagial. The band’s first official music video, not counting previous videos composed of live footage, was directed by Alexander Kraudelt and Lukas Hambach and produced by Frameshock, with additional visuals by Craig Murray. Upon initial post, the video was instantly censored by YouTube because of nudity but is now available via Vimeo. (Update: the video is back on YouTube and is age-restricted)

“…ambitious and adventurous…” – Terrorizer

“The sixth album from German post-metal doombringers THE OCEAN is huge… In the course of the record, tender piano interludes get stomped on by Mastodon-shaped footprints, lush strings work next to bulldozing double-kick work, and, at the end, the submarine crashes at Melvins tempos” – Spin

“…a hallmark album for a gifted team of artisans… Pelagial is one of the most invested albums THE OCEAN has yet conceived. Prepare to be not only submerged but actually touched by this album” — Blabbermouth

“Pelagial is brilliantly written, expertly executed and filled with the kind of songwriting most bands can only dream of” – Crave Online

“Pelagial resonates so deeply because its sonic continuity is matched with shifting, unified composition. The album viscerally depicts the spectrum of submersion while highlighting the musicians’ versatility and cohesion. The band has never written more intriguing music, and THE OCEAN COLLECTIVE has never been a more apt name” – MetalSucks

“…a journey within itself…” — Metal Insider

“…destined to be one of the year’s best releases” – Echoes And Dust

“Creating music with a real meaning cannot be taken as a hobby. Either you put everything into it and make your message known or you don’t. Their correlation between diving deeper into the ocean and diving into the inner workings of the human mind is astounding… you would be a complete fool to not pick up this true work of art” – New Noise Magazine

THE OCEAN Release New Video, Ready to Hit the Road

THE OCEAN launched a brand new video for Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams from their most recent album, Pelagial. The video is the band’s first official music video, not counting previous videos composed of live footage, directed by Alexander Kraudelt and Lukas Hambach, produced by Frameshock, with additional visuals by Craig Murray. Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams is streaming now on metalblade.com/theocean.

Guitarist and founding member Robin Staps comments:

“This clip is blending performance footage with excerpts from Craig Murray’s Pelagial movie, which was released along with the limited edition CD and vinyl boxset versions of the album. We’ve never really done a clip like that before, but it was great fun making this.”

Pelagial, the latest album from THE OCEAN, is received with open arms and ears across the globe – this is a band that are becoming widely regarded as leaders within their genre.

Metal Sucks declared The Ocean have “never written more intriguing music.”

“Mastodon‐shaped footprints, lush strings… [before] the submarine crashes at Melvins tempos” – Spin

“more luxurious, experimental and textural” – Decibel

“ambitious and adventurous” – Terrorizer

“melodrama, intimacy, grandeur, grace and big fucking riffs” – Kerrang

“With Isis gone, no one has yet taken their place as intelligent and sensitive masters of post‐metal but, with this, there’s no doubt that The Ocean are shoe‐ins for the title” – RockARolla

The latter’s emphasis is fitting considering The Ocean recently toured a number of sell out shows with another master of post‐metal, Cult of Luna. The Mastodon reference is relevant after they invited The Ocean out for their summer tour dates, and the diversity on display is never more apparent when you consider tours in the past few years with Dillinger Escape Plan, Opeth and Anathema. The Ocean has an army of fans, and undoubtedly the respect of their peers.

Diverse elements were honed and perfected on Pelagial, and this ethos is at the heart of the touring package for The Ocean’s headline European tour. For an album that treads a wild and creative path within and outside of the supposed boundaries of metal, Norway’s SHINING could not be a more appropriate addition to the touring bill. Their new album One One One was recently released and it’s direct and pulsating approach is gathering the same kind of response that saw 2010’s Blackjazz get rave reviews all over the world, with contemporaries such as Danko Jones and Mike Portnoy writing pieces praising the band. If you’ve seen them live then you’ll know how good they are; if you’ve not, you need to!

Poland’s TIDES FROM NEBULA meanwhile have mesmerized the underground and in 2013 they take a step up, releasing their new album via a brand new label. They bring postrock to this package, a welcome ingredient due to this genre touching aspects of Pelagial. Finally, France’s HACRIDE bring some serious, technical heaviness to the tour, as anyone who has heard their new album Back To Where You’ve Never Been will testify.

CATTLE DECAPITATION To Release 7″ Single

CATTLE DECAPITATION will be releasing a 7″ single this summer! Your Disposal features the B-side, An Exposition of Insides, which was previously available only as a Japanese bonus track on the band’s most recent album, Monolith of Inhumanity. The single is available (both black and clear vinyl) for order on-line on indiemerchstore.com for $5.50, as well as in a bundle with a t-shirt for $18.99. Pick up your copy of the single HERE, and check out the t-shirt bundle HERE. Fans attending this year’s The Summer Slaughter Tour can grab their copy at the band’s merch booth throughout the tour.

7″ available via indiemerchstore.com and at the band’s merch table on tour

Vocalist Travis Ryan comments:

“We noticed a lot of people were dismayed to find out there was a track available out there on a Japanese version of Monolith of Inhumanity that nobody outside of Japan had ever heard before. When it hit YouTube, that’s when we started getting emails from fans. We noticed the lyrics weren’t inside that version or available anywhere at all so that gave us the idea of throwing it on a b-side and releasing a 7″ vinyl single for Your Disposal with the song An Exposition of Insides! We feel that Monolith is the mother of all of our releases so far and I thought it’d be funny to make it look like she just squirted out a baby and that’s what this little guy looks like. THE OCEAN Reveal First Week Chart Numbers

Pelagial, the new maritime-themed studio offering from progressive metal revolutionists THE OCEAN entered the Billboard Heatseekers Chart at #10 upon its first week of release! In addition, Pelagial landed at #55 on the Billboard Top Independent Album Chart, #26 on the Billboard Current Hard Music Chart and #39 on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Chart. In Canada, the record ranked in at #23 on the Hard Music Chart and #194 on the Top 200 Current Albums Chart. Elsewhere, Pelagial hit #72 on the German Media Market Chart and #68 on the German Media Control Control Top 100 Chart.

Their deepest and most accomplished work to date, Pelagial is a 53-minute exploratory composition written, recorded, mixed and intended to-be-performed-live as one single piece of music. Centered around all five pelagic depth zones — epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathyalpelagic, abyssopelagic, and hadopelagic – Pelagial quite literally submerges its listeners into an aquatic journey that is at once tranquil and terrifying. Pelagial begins rather light and progressively gets heavier and slows as the band reaches the unfathomable depths of the hadopelagic zone, characterized by complete darkness and a thousandfold increased pressure as compared to surface level.

Said Decibel Magazine in a recent review of the massive undertaking: “Where the band was once steeped in sludgy noise/metalcore with orchestral interludes, they’ve become more luxurious, experimental and textural. Pelagial… further continues that shift, working on multi-tiered levels and drawing from DEP-inspired chaos, Opeth-like moods and Between The Buried And Me genre fiddling. It’s an album that strives to be all things at once without crossing into a ‘look-at-me’ mess.”

Mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Witchcraft) at Fascination Street Studios in Örebrö, Sweden, Pelagial is available now as a double CD, which includes a vocal and an instrumental version of the album.

Check out the special clip video of the record currently posted at Invisible Oranges at THIS LOCATION as well as a full stream of the instrumental version, courtesy of Spin Magazine, HERE. Order your copy of Pelagial at: http://www.theoceancollective.com/pelagial.

“The sixth album from German post-metal doombringers THE OCEAN is huge… In the course of the record, tender piano interludes get stomped on by Mastodon-shaped footprints, lush strings work next to bulldozing double-kick work, and, at the end, the submarine crashes at Melvins tempos.” – Spin

“…as fantastic as it is dense. The concepts are dense. The music is dense. The two hundred and something individual tracks, all mastered together as one single piece of music, scream density like being sat on by a bull elephant.” – The Monolith

Pelagial is brilliantly written, expertly executed and filled with the kind of songwriting most bands can only dream of.” – Craveonline

Pelagial resonates so deeply because its sonic continuity is matched with shifting, unified composition. The album viscerally depicts the spectrum of submersion while highlighting the musicians’ versatility and cohesion. The band has never written more intriguing music, and THE OCEAN COLLECTIVE has never been a more apt name.” – MetalSucks

“…a journey within itself…” — Metal Insider

“…destined to be one of the year’s best releases” – Echoes And Dust

“Creating music with a real meaning cannot be taken as a hobby. Either you put everything into it and make your message known or you don’t. Their correlation between diving deeper into the ocean and diving into the inner workings of the human mind is astounding…you would be a complete fool to not pick up this true work of art.” – New Noise Magazine

Pelagial is quite possibly THE OCEAN’s most ambitious record to date — not only conceptually, but musically as well… THE OCEAN have been on the cutting edge of progressive songwriting since their inception, but Pelagial may be the record that finally puts them ahead of their peers.” – Heavy Blog Is Heavy

“Beyond impressive. It’s godly almost; perfectionism to the point that every minute flaw forces you to question whether it’s you or the album that’s to blame. It’s an album with a layered depth rarely found in modern music that never demands your exploration of those depths in order to appreciate the music.” – Axis of Metal
