The VICTORY RECORDS STAGE will feature headliner Whitechapel as well asThy Art Is Murder, Jungle Rot, Sister Sin, Sworn In, Shattered Sun, Feed Her To The Sharks, Code Orange and Kissing Candice.

Kerry King, guitarist of ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAIN STAGE headliners Slayer states,

I don’t know if third time will be a charm, but it will definitely be hellish! Slayer and King Diamond on stage for the first time together in the States- NEVER has Mayhem been more evil. DON’T FUCKIN’ MISS IT.

ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAIN STAGE performer and heavy metal hellion King Diamond states,

This is going to be one hot and hellish summer! Slayer and King Diamond on the same stage – it does not get more devilish than this! We will be putting on a one hour set with the full King Diamond stage production. As for a set list, I’m not gonna reveal that here, but it will be built around “Dreams of Horror”. The Puppet Master will be there with Grandma, and we will even go as far back in time as to 1777 (hint). You’re all in for one hell of a show if you come to this Sabbath!

It has been eight years and it feels like it started just yesterday. We are so excited about this year’s lineup and having the mighty Slayer back in support of a new album. In addition, the first time for King Diamond and HELLYEAH will be awesome, as well as The Devil Wears Prada’s first time on the Main Stage. The Victory Stage has amazing bands and will play throughout the day. Heavy music is thriving in America and we are excited to be a part of it,” state John Reese and Kevin Lyman, ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL producers.

Meet This Year’s ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL Bands!

ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAIN STAGE:

Slayer
The Chicago Tribune’s Greg Kot wrote that the five-time-nominated, two-time Grammy winning Slayer is “one of the great American rock bands of the last 30 years, forget about genre.” Their membership in “The Big Four” – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax – the four bands that defined the thrash/metal genre – secures their place in music history. Indeed, few bands come close to matching the intensity that Slayer brings to its live shows, having been named “Best Live Band” by numerous media outlets including Revolver, SPIN, and Metal Hammer. With songs that mirror the turmoil and aberrations of our society – God’s terrifying global genocide, the chaos of our broken political system, chemical warfare, the hideous minds of serial killers, and the way-too-close proximity of world horrors that technology has brought us, Slayer remains crushing and brutal, steadfastly refusing to cater to the Mainstream. Slayer’s founding member, guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed in 2013, and Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has been filling in since. Paul Bostaph, who was Slayer’s drummer from ’94 – ’01, has rejoined bassist/vocalist Tom Araya and guitarist Kerry King, and is back behind the kit. Slayer is currently in the studio recording a new album set for a 2015 release.

King Diamond
King Diamond’s Dreams of Horror double album was released in November of 2014 and is the only best-of compiled and approved by the band. The tracks were remastered and enhanced by Andy LaRocque and King Diamond himself. Give Me Your Soul…Please, King Diamond’s 2007 full-length, was nominated for a “best metal performance” Grammy Award!

HELLYEAH
HELLYEAH is comprised of Chad Gray (Mudvayne), Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Damageplan), Tom Maxwell (Nothingface), Kyle Sanders (Bloodsimple) and Christian Brady (Magna-Fi). Their current album, BLOOD FOR BLOOD, is a welcome return to form. It leaves a mark, thanks to songs like the angular, vengeful “DMF,” a song birthed by the sort of anger that can’t be faked; it will leave you wondering who pissed these guys off. “Gift” is dirty, rowdy rock with equal parts groove and swagger, but also possessed of the sort of punk rock energy that would make Motorhead fans turns their heads. Then there is moodier, more contemplative fare like ” Moth” and “Hush” which connect on an emotional, cellular level, proving that you can be incredibly heavy in ways other than loud and fast. “Hush” is taking Rock radio by storm – among the most-added records in each of its first 3 weeks at theformat. The video for the track debuts upon this tour announce – see it at www.hellyeahband.com

The Devil Wears Prada
The Devil Wears Prada recently announced their return to Rise Records and their next release, a conceptual EP entitled Space, coming in summer 2015. The Space EP marks the band’s first concept release since Zombie and the first on Rise Records since their sophomore release, Plagues, in 2007. Zombie debuted at #11 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Charts in the summer of 2010. The band is currently headlining the “Zombie 5 Tour” to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the acclaimed EP.

VICTORY RECORDS STAGE:

Whitechapel
Whitechapel’s Our Endless War was released in April of 2014 and it debuted at a staggering #10 on the Billboard Top 200 charts, as well as #1 on both the iTunes rock and metal charts. Watch Whitechapel’s latest video, the intense and bloody Mitch Massie-directed “Let Me Burn”, nowHERE.

Thy Art Is Murder
Australia’s incendiary extreme musical export Thy Art is Murder, return with one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Produced and mixed by Will Putney (Suicide Silence, Exhumed, The Acacia Strain), Holy War is the band’s second release for Nuclear Blast Entertainment and third full-length album overall. Holy War will be available in various formats (digital; limited digi-pak + bonus track; assorted color vinyl; exclusive mail-order picture disc) and unleashed in North America on June 30th, in Europe & Australia on June 26th, and in the U.K. on June 29th.

Jungle Rot
American death-metal band, Jungle Rot, has been providing the masses with headbang-worthy anthems since their formation in 1994, with recent notable touring including runs with Suffocation, Kataklysm, and a killer performance on the 70,000 Tons Of Metal Festival Cruise 2015. Fans can expect a new Jungle Rot album this June, just in time for the Mayhem to begin.

Sister Sin
Lead by one of Revolver Magazine’s Hottest Chicks of 2015, Liv Jagrell, Swedish heavy-metal band Sister Sin have been riding high since the release of their October 2014 album, Black Lotus. Currently wrapping up a hugely successful, high-voltage tour with UDO in Europe, the no-nonsense four-piece is ready to take over the States once more, delivering a real dose of rock ‘n roll to the masses.

Sworn In
Chicago’s Sworn In just released their second album, the conceptual The Lovers/The Devil, this past Tuesday April 7th while on the road for their first-ever headline tour.

Shattered Sun
Poised to dominate the metal scene comes Texas melodic metal six-piece, Shattered Sun, with their Victory Records debut album, Hope Within Hatred (out April 21st). Currently crushing venues across the US as direct support to Testament and Exodus, Shattered Sun has come along “with all the riffs, all the hooks and several fucktons of heavy metal fury” assures Metal Hammer.

Feed Her To The Sharks
Australian quintet, Feed Her To The Sharks, are out for blood and proved such with their 2015 Victory Records debut album, Fortitude, which was applauded by BLUNT Mag for “taking metalcore back to its riffy, growly roots”. Having conquered their own metal scene, performing on the 2013 Van’s Warped Tour Australia and constant touring since, this band is ready to unleash their dynamic, merciless live show onto the masses this summer in the States.

Code Orange
Code Orange’s I Am King was released in September of 2014 and debuted on the Billboard 200 at #29. The album quickly peaked at #10 on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums chart and has gained rave reviews from music critics and fans alike. Watch Code Orange’s latest video, “Dreams in Inertia”, HERE.

Kissing Candice
Theatrics are promised with each performance and every listen of New York’s gore-metal purveyors, Kissing Candice, who will be unleashing their Victory Records debut album this summer in time for the Mayhem festivities. Can’t wait? Catch the blood-soaked, masked madmen of Kissing Candice performing alongside Twiztid and Davey Suicide, beginning May 1st.

Remember – get your tickets beginning Friday, April 17th at 10:00am local time! We’ll see you in the pit!

BATTLECROSS Release Slayer Cover

Battlecross released a new cover of Slayer’s War Ensemble.

Guitarist Hiran Deraniyagala says,

“Slayer is obviously one of our biggest influences. Slayer taught me personally to not give a f#@k and throw in attitude in your riffs. War Ensemble is one of my favorite Slayer songs because it embodies the aggression and attitude of Slayer but also is more dynamic than a traditional Slayer song that is all speed. Jeff Hanneman was an underrated player and it’s shame his greatness was only recognized after he passed. In honor of Jeff we wanted to cover “War Ensemble” and throw in a bit of our own twist and speed to the song. Slayer!”

The track will be streaming via Metal Hammer UK & Metal Hammer Germany beginning May 27 and will later be made available to fans via iTunes.

It was recorded, mixed and mastered by Matt Dalton at 37 Studios in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

The band recently kicked off a North American tour with Killswitch Engage and Trivium that wraps up at the end of May, then the band ventures to Europe in June for a series of festival appearances, as well as club shows with Huntress.

New SOULFLY Single Now Available

Logo: Nuclear Blast Records

Brazilian Thrash Heroes SOULFLY just released the first single, called ‘Bloodshed’ from their upcoming record, Savages which is now available at the Nuclear Blast Singlepool!

Max Cavalera is the walking embodiment of creative energy, of all of the diverse layers of urgency that are possible from that select few whose artistic output defines genres. Mystic shaman, protest singer, revolutionary hero, everyday metalhead, furious consumer of heavy music of all shades, husband, father, leader, songwriter… Cavalera reigns as the adoptive tribal chief of a generation of fans, stretching from the roughest slums of South America to the coldest confines of Russia. Anywhere that people are disenfranchised, the songs of SOULFLY serve as their anthems.

image001

Armed with Cavalera’s four-stringed guitars, unmistakable growl and instantly recognizable riffage, the muddy tones and constant rhythmic bounce of SOULFLY has retained its gritty edge while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in metal. Savages represents a career-defining moment, solidifying the lineup with longtime lead guitarist Marc Rizzo (who has been in SOULFLY almost as long as Max was in SEPULTURA), bassist Tony Campos (STATIC X, MINISTRY, PRONG) and Max’s 21 year-old Zyon, who splits his time between drumming in LODY KONG and now SOULFLY.

“All of the things that make SOULFLY killer are combined in Savages,” Max declares.

Savages melds the most brutal, the heaviest and overall the most vibrant components that made up each record in SOULFLY’s diverse catalog. By Max’s own account, Savages is possessed of the tribal groove of the first two SOULFLY albums, particularly in songs like ‘Bloodshed’, ‘Ayatollah of Rock ‘N’ Rolla’ and ‘Master of Savagery’. But there’s also the thrash metal that was found on DARK AGES and OMEN; whereas the CAVALERA CONSPIRACY records contain short, punky bursts, the new SOULFLY record gets into the epic length territory of early METALLICA. The death metal vibe of SOULFLY’s Enslaved emerges in songs like ‘Fallen’ and ‘Cannibal Holocaust’.

“I really like the name Savages. I like single words that sound powerful, like ‘Primitive’, ‘Roots’, ‘Arise’,” Max explains.

“It’s about the human condition right now. We have the Internet and we’re working on missions to Mars, but we are still decapitating each other and blowing up marathons. We’re still savages. Even with technology and how far we’ve come in the world, our spirit is still that of a savage.”

A trailblazing pioneer and musician with millions of albums sold who nevertheless retains boundless street cred due to his grimy, raw and undeniable authenticity; Max Cavalera is one of the most prolific artists the realm of heavy music has ever known. There’s CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, which reunited Max with his brother and former bandmate, Igor Cavalera. There was the brutal attack of NAILBOMB, Max’s collaboration with Alex Newport from FUDGE TUNNEL, which included members of DEAD KENNEDYS, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY, BIOHAZARD and NEUROSIS on-stage. There’s his forthcoming band with members of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, MASTODON and THE MARS VOLTA. Of course, there’s Max’s unassailable work as SEPULTURA’s founder, leading the Brazilian band from their badass lo-fi beginnings, through their era of sophisticated thrash classics, up through the cultural landmark that is ‘Roots’.

image002

SOULFLY began almost instantaneously after his departure from the band he founded. The eponymously titled debut Soulfly sold over 500,000 copies in the United States alone, further expanding upon the tribal foundation of ‘Roots’ with percussive instrumentation, forays into esoteric sounds and multiple guest performers. Across the seven albums and never-ending tours that followed, Max worked with a who’s-who of the heavy music scene as band mates, guest musicians and touring members, including guys from SLIPKNOT, SLAYER, MEGADETH, DEFTONES, RADIOHEAD, STONE SOUR, CYPRESS HILL, MACHINE HEAD, DEVILDRIVER, FEAR FACTORY, MORBID ANGEL, THROWDOWN, S.O.D., SKINDRED, BORKNAGAR, WILL HAVEN and CATTLE DECAPITATION, among others.

In addition to Max’s own self-production, a number of important producers have lent their skills to SOULFLY, including Roots producer Ross Robinson (KORN, AT THE DRIVE-IN), Toby Wright (Ozzy Osbourne, SLAYER), Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE), ex-SOULFLY guitarist Logan Mader (FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, GORJIA) and Zeuss (HATEBREED, SUICIDE SILENCE) and Terry Date (PANTERA, DEFTONES).

Cavalera asked Date, who had mixed for SOULFLY in the past, to produce the new album. Once studio time with the legendary producer was on the calendar, Max kicked into high gear with the material. Max and Zyon worked on the songs that would comprise Savages at home.

Zyon came up to me and said, ‘Give me a shot. I’ll play on the record for you. I won’t let you down,” explains the elder Cavalera. “I went into a room with him to jam and it felt great. So I said, ‘Fuck yeah, let’s do it!”

Generally on a SOULFLY album, the drummers would learn the songs in the studio, based on demo recordings from Max. This time, Max had the luxury of working out the songs at home with Zyon.

We jammed every single day for a month. He knew 90% of the material already when we got into the studio. It reminded me of recording the old Sepultura stuff, like Arise and Chaos A.D., Igor knew exactly what he was going to do before we went into the studio. This was very similar.”

Cavalera says he must’ve written at least 1,000 riffs specifically for Savages.

“The killer riff is what hooks the whole song together,” he says. “For me the writing process is about finding the most killer riffs possible. It’s a battle; sometimes I struggle with the guitar for hours. You have to throw it down on the floor and take a break. Come back a few hours later. ‘Let’s try this again, motherfucker!’  Grab it again and go to battle, go to war with the guitar until you get the right riffs.”

Max points to BLACK SABBATH’s ‘Symptom of the Universe’ as one of the penultimate riffs of all time, citing SABBATH’s Tony Iommi and METALLICA frontman James Hetfield as among the riff-masters he most admires.

“I think of riff making as an art-form. I take it really seriously. I think it deserves more attention. It has such value.”

Speaking of riffs, Rizzo came into the band a decade ago and his love of thrash metal, death metal and collaborative spirit has energized Max ever since.

“When Marc entered Soulfly, it was a drastic change. He’s the guitar player I’ve been looking for my whole life. Andreas [Kisser] and I really clicked when we worked together. I never had that again after that. We had other guys that were cool, but it was never 100% there. When Marc came in, I found it! We’ve developed a great bond since.”

Rizzo particularly shines on the opening track on Savages, ‘Bloodshed.’

“There’s stuff all over the song – clean guitars, feedback – he just makes the song better.”

Campos has a lengthy resume in the world of metal and Max says they bonded over their shared Latino heritage, among other things.

“I had this idea about this guy Vargas, a Venezuelan cannibal, they call him ‘El Comegente.’ He’s the Hannibal Lecter of the Andes. We both read about it. Tony sings some of it in Spanish and I sing in Portuguese. He’s a great bass player too, fucking amazing. Killer bass tones, distortion, all balls-out metal. He keeps this shit real heavy, great tone. It’s great recording with guys who know what they’re doing. I don’t have to ask if they know.”

Max acknowledges the inherent risk in putting a 21 year-old behind the kit for such an important record, but it was a risk he absolutely wanted to take.

“To have my son drumming on the album, that’s killer. I like risks. I like to start shit up and see what happens. Even if I fail, at least I knew I tried. Rather than knowing I didn’t try at all. To me, that’s the bigger failure. It took a little bit of courage to put my son on it. I came to the studio and told Terry there was a young drummer who doesn’t play to a click. Terry knew what to do and Zyon did great. The drums sound amazing.”

Like all things Max Cavalera, does SOULFLY’s Savages is a family affair. Not only does it mark Zyon’s recorded debut with the band, but one of Max’s other kids throws down some vocals in the opening track, ‘Bloodshed’.

“My son Igor has a killer punk rock voice that reminds me of the old CORROSION OF CONFORMITY days,” Max says.

“The chorus has this old punk style riff, almost like a MISFITS type riff. His voice is killer.”

Like every SOULFLY album, Savages contains an impressive guest list comprised of veterans and up-and-comers. CLUTCH’s Neil Fallon turns up on ‘Ayatollah of Rock ‘N’ Rolla’, the title of which was inspired by Mel Gibson’s classic Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior movie. Jamie Hanks from I DECLARE WAR brought his high and low deathcore vocals to ‘Fallen’, a death metal oriented song Max says is in the vein of CANNIBAL CORPSE.

Mitch Harris from NAPALM DEATH contributed vocals to ‘K.C.S.’ Harris has been around the Cavalera’s long enough that there are videos of him changing Zyon’s diapers when SOULFLY’s new drummer was just one month old.

Mitch came to the studio just to hang out during a day off from tour,” Max explains. “I’m like, ‘You ready to sing some shit on this record?’ I put him on the spot. He’s like, ‘Right now?’ I said, ‘Fuck yeah, let’s do it!’ There was one point where we were recording together where he did a scream and I saw his eyeball popping out of his face like a cartoon. I was like, ‘Dude that was the most metal thing I’ve seen in a long time.”

Even as Max continues to consume new music from band like NINE INCH NAILS, MAN MUST DIE, TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED and I DECLARE WAR, even as he revisits seminal material from METALLICA, SLAYER, C.O.C. and the like, and indulges his penchant for world music, and gets his hands in his other projects and collaborations, it all adds up to a singular, distinct, straightforward and riff-heavy machine known as SOULFLY.

MACHINE HEAD Announce New Bassist

It is with great pride and excitement that Machine Head announce Jared MacEachern as their new bass player.  Jared has already begun rehearsals for the upcoming Rockstar Mayhem U.S. summer festival tour and will soon relocate from North Carolina to Northern California to begin pre-production for Machine Head’s upcoming 8th studio release.

image001

MacEachern auditioning for Machine Head

Some fans might remember MacEachern from 2007’s The Black Tyranny Tour, playing with his previous band Sanctity.  Machine Head, challenged to find a fill-in bass player for the North American tour after an injury sidelined their then-4-stringer, also found themselves in need of someone to sing harmony with singer/guitarist Robb Flynn.

Flynn remembers, “We had locked in Brandon Sigmund of local boys Hostility to play bass on that tour, but we soon realized we’d need someone to hit the high harmonies. Our A&R guy Monte Conner recommended Jared since he was already on the tour, and that ended up being a great call.  Jared flew out a few days before the tour and rehearsed with us and did great. What was most impressive about the whole thing was that he was doing double duty – opening for Machine Head with his band at the time Sanctity, and then later singing with us. He would stay sober until after our set, and often get in the van and drive all night. His seriousness and dedication was awesome to see and it stuck with us.”

Earlier this year, Machine Head conducted an extensive search for candidates through various channels, the most fruitful of which proved to be video submissions. Sifting through more than 400 videos, the band personally reviewed and evaluated everyone’s performances, including MacEachern, who made the short list without a second thought. image002

Lead guitarist Phil Demmel recalls, “There were dozens of amazing players, and it was interesting to watch each one take on our tunes. One of our biggest criteria for this gig was to be able to sing the high harmonies. That was our litmus test. And Jared passed with flying colors.”

After reviewing all of the submissions, the band narrowed down the 400+ candidates to a short list of 7, each of whom took a trip to Oakland to perform a handful of songs in person and spend the day hanging with the band.

Remembers Drummer Dave McClain, “Jared came in to the audition and just killed it!  Besides being able to nail the bass and vocal harmonies, he also had the vibe and personality to make it feel like we were a BAND again. It was a great feeling and we all knew he was the guy.”

MacEachern first picked up concert bass at 12 and around the same time, discovered metal.

Jared recalls, “I heard the song Unforgiven and really liked it. The next day my friend gave me Kill ‘Em All and it was over. I became completely enamored with all the metal bands of that time; Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Pantera, but when it came to bass, it was all about Cliff Burton, he was, and is my dude.”

This Is The End

Halo

With a brief stint at the Brevard School for Music Performance, Jared consistently played bass for the past 22 years, most notably in Sanctity, where oddly enough, the band needed a guitar player.

“That was purely out of necessity” he explains, “I’d been a bass player, but that gig opened up and I gave it a shot on the 6-stringer.”

Sanctity Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctity_(band)

Beneath The Machine

After extensive global touring with Sanctity and the birth of his daughter in 2007, the band’s release from their label ignited Jared’s sense of responsibility and he quit the band to focus on her.  But music stayed a part of his life and he continued to jam locally throughout the south with death metal bands From A Dig and Telic, until he saw Machine Head were in need and thought he’d try out.

Frontman Robb Flynn reflects, “We really wanted a guy that was hungry for this, someone who could live and breathe this with us. Dave would joke around that we didn’t want to get someone too green that’d be like ‘oh my god, is this a dressing room?!’, but we also didn’t want someone who was too jaded by the whole thing and ‘been there done that’. We thought the perfect guy would be someone who’d paid some dues, who had done 9 or 10 crummy van tours, and wasn’t broken by that, but inspired to keep going and play music, and in many ways that was Jared. I mean hell, the guy’s only rode in a bus for two nights, one of which was with us! It brings a really cool level of appreciation to the table, and it shows where his heart’s at”

Jared enthuses, “I’m ready to get to work!  This tour is going to kick ass and the new tunes are heavy as shit! I’m SO looking forward to making good music with good dudes!”
