EARTHLESS Unveils New Song

Award-winning San Diego power rock band EARTHLESS will release its brand new album From the Ages on October 8 via Tee Pee Records. The first new studio album from the globally celebrated trio since the release of 2007’s critically acclaimed Rhythms from a Cosmic Sky, the hour-long double LP was recorded with producer Phil Manley (Trans Am, The Fucking ChampsSubArachnoid Space).

NOISEY premiered the new EARTHLESS track Equus October, calling the band’s sound “sonic sculptures as powerful as Heisenberg meth.”  The song premiere also includes an in-depth interview with drummer Mario Rubalcaba, who talks in detail about the band, recently dubbed “expert practitioners of an outdated art” by the New York Times.

Head over to NOISEY and crank EARTHLESS “Equus October” at THIS location.

EARTHLESS (L to R: Mike Eginton, Mario Rubalcaba, Isaiah Mitchell)

From the Ages is available to pre-order now via iTunes and as a limited edition, colored double vinyl album (pre-order LP HERE).

Stereogum recently unleashed the brand new EARTHLESS song Violence of the Red Sea, calling the band’s sound “an absolutely apocalyptic brand of instrumental stoner-psychedelic-doom that relies on each player basically being a total powerhouse carrying an equal (and very heavy) load.”  Rock EARTHLESS‘ stunning “Violence of the Red Sea” right now at THIS location.

Pitchfork is also giving music fans the first taste of new EARTHLESS, premiering the new song Uluru Rock.  Check out EARTHLESS‘ “Uluru Rock” now at THIS location.

“We feel this is some of the strongest material that we have ever created and we cannot wait to get out there and share it with everyone in a live setting,” said the band when asked for comment.

From the Ages‘ sprawling, epic cover art was created by renowned rock music poster artist Alan Forbes (Queens of the Stone Age, SWANS, Black Crowes) while the record’s surreal inner design was brought to life by the band’s own Mike Eginton.

Formed in 2001, EARTHLESS prides itself on creating energetic, utterly unique and free thinking instrumental music inspired by an eclectic mix of German kraut rock and Japanese heavy blues-rock. The Californian trio has dedicated itself to mastery of the mind-bending jam session, evoking the spirits of Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath in equal measure.

Named after a song title from vintage New York garage-psych band The Druids of Stonehenge, EARTHLESS‘ sound has been called “a sonic kaleidoscope of lava and lightning”, earning it the title of “California’s loudest band.”  The group delivers “one of the best live shows in all of modern, heavy rock,” leading to one reviewer stating that the band’s “epic shredding harkens back to the days were psychedelic rock had balls the size of grapefruits and wasn’t afraid to take its listeners on a ride for which they may never return.”

Each member of EARTHLESS has done time in many other bands. Drummer (and former pro skater) Mario Rubalcaba currently plays in the hardcore punk band OFF! and has also occupied the drum throne in Rocket From The Crypt and Hot Snakes amongst many others. Bassist Mike Eginton played with Electric Nazarene and guitarist Isaiah Mitchell was most recently in Howlin’ Rain, has played with Nebula and Drunk Horse and also heads up the Bay Area band Golden Void.

In the end, EARTHLESS is the musical rock that grounds the three musicians and now, after more than half a decade since the release of their last studio LP, EARTHLESS has returned and is out to prove — through sheer rock power — why they are considered the cream of the modern day heavy psych scene.

“EARTHLESS From the Ages (Tee Pee) is the first album in six years by the San Diego psychedelic band, who make songs in long chunks of episodic form via wah-wah pedal, riff and groove; they’re expert practitioners of an outdated art” – THE NEW YORK TIMES

“To describe EARTHLESS’ music is a bit like describing a dream. In fact, there’s nothing altogether straight forward about the band’s sound except, well, that they fucking rock. Yeah, let’s go with that description: Fucking-rock” – SAN DIEGO CITYBEAT

“EARTHLESS purvey majestic acid rock, a genre that bakes the neurons with industrious instrumentals. And this trio blisters more brain cells than most. EARTHLESS keeps even this interpretation ruggedly exploratory, moving with transcendent skill from classic rock badlands to heavy metal cosmos” – SF WEEKLY

“EARTHLESS can do dynamics, shifting from hazy clouds of feedback to sludgy doom riffage, but they generally don’t. Instead the band starts at 100% speaker-cone-bursting ear-drum-rattling intensity and stays there for as long as physically possible. It’s sort of like doing level-4 hot yoga in the chamber of Tommy Chong’s bong” – WASHINGTON CITY PAPER

“Think of Hendrix playing with Sabbath without the vocals and add Cream’s sense of movement and thud… insanely gifted EARTHLESS: they’re a whole other thing in American power rock right now. They point a way that few will be able to follow” – ALL MUSIC

“Music so freewheeling that it begs to be slathered with hyperbole. You know, the usual ‘gamma rays of madness bashing your DNA into the Stone Age on laser fingers’ type of thing. EARTHLESS have massive chops” – STYLUS

CAROUSEL Streaming New Album

Pittsburgh rock n’ roll band CAROUSEL will drop its awesomely-titled debut LP Jeweler’s Daughter on August 20 via Tee Pee Records. The dual guitar-driven four-piece ‘s music incorporates many elements, most notably the harmonized guitar lines of Thin Lizzy, the bombast of Mountain and the rhythmic propulsion of Diamond Head, Motorhead and other bands whose names include the word “head”. Now, respected hard rock haven The Obelisk gives heavy music fans a feast of sound, streaming  Jeweler’s Daughter in its entirety while calling CAROUSEL’s riveting rock “a modern take on early ’70s swagger.” Crank your speakers ’til they explode and rock CAROUSEL’s “Jeweler’s Daughter” LP today at THIS location!

CAROUSEL has been a mainstay of the Pittsburgh rock scene since its very first show in 2011, sharing the stage with local rock, metal and punk bands as well as touring acts such as Mount Carmel, Purling Hiss and Disappears, all the while demonstrating an earth-shaking ability to rock with each and every live performance. CAROUSEL’s Wheeler and Jake Leger (drummer for Pittsburgh indie-rock icons Karl Hendricks Trio) were previously members of noise-rock trio Magic Wolf, while second guitarist Chris Tritschler also plays in the PGH metal band Lady Beast. With CAROUSEL’s strong pedigree, instantly-memorable two-guitar harmonized lines (not so much like Iron Maiden, more like Wishbone Ash or Thin Lizzy) and rhythmic swing (or “Bill Ward-isms”), the band can easily hold the interest of punk and metal fans, but add in the charismatic vocals of Wheeler, and it also fits right in at a local yinzer bar. The  band’s name is drawn from the futuristic sci-fi movie “Logan’s Run” and the device in the film that terminates young citizens once they reach the ripe age of 30.

CAROUSEL is the epitome of guitar rock. Based solely on the buzz from the successful self-release of Tears of Stone, their debut 12″ EP, CAROUSEL was was invited to join the Tee Pee Records family. Now, armed with a new full-length LP, CAROUSEL looks to make its move into the national spotlight. Look for them on tour this fall!

2.) Long Time
3.) Crippler
4.) On My Way
5.) Waste of Time
6.) Light of Day
7.) Nightfall
8.) Contrition
9.) Penance

Carousel Single of the Month July 2013 on Mind Cure Records

“Jeweler’s Daughter is Carousel‘s debut for Tee Pee Records (and truly there isn’t a better match right now between band and label). Carousel deliver the goods on their own terms and in a way that not only has one foot in the past but the other firmly secured in the future” – METAL INSIDER

“Carousel’s epic-rock approach is clearly on display” – PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE

“the epitome of guitar rock: The rhythm section holds down the beat while both guitarists ride blues riffs as far as they can go; ‘rhythm guitar’ isn’t really something Carousel does. Besides the Thin Lizzy guitars, bands like Blue Cheer and early Sabbath are obvious Carousel antecedents” – PITTSBURGH CITY PAPER

“There’s the easy-listening classic rock bullshit (the stuff a DJ spins at your lame cousin’s wedding) that clouds Clear Channel airwaves, but that’s not what interests Carousel. Think Thin Lizzy, Steppenwolf, or Bow Wow (no, not the hip-hop dude – look ’em up-one of the best Japanese rock bands ever). Like these bands, when Carousel enters the stage, they jostle our senses with mean guitar licks and an epic rhythm section. All they’re missing is some fake blood and a ridiculous drum riser. And they rock hard” – DRAW US LINES

DANAVA Signs to Tee Pee Records

Portland, OR sci-fi psych-metal rockers DANAVA (pronounced: DON-UH-VUH) signed to NYC’s Tee Pee Records. The group, who just completed a month-long European headlining tour, will enter an undisclosed studio this summer to record their Tee Pee debut and follow up to 2011’s Hemisphere of Shadows, which was called “a 37-minute contact high” by the Sacramento News & Review.

Darkly Hypnotic Herculean Heavyweights Sling Serious Riffs Like its 1971

Speedy and sinuous, DANAVA out rocks, out progs, out psychs and out retro-proto-metals all comers. Led by singer/guitarist/songwriter Greg Meleney, the quartet creates utterly unique astro-rock that is a thing of spectral beauty. Described as “a journey into a parallel sonic universe,” DANAVA’s side-long songs are sprinkled with spacey synth-y FX that push the band’s sound into outer space. This is progressive riff rock; barn-burning scorchers full of unison and tongue-twisting melodic runs that melt listener’s brains. DANAVA’s relentless fret-board wizardry – cast in the spirit of Iommi and Schenker – produces extended elliptical structures that live in a proto-magic era somewhere between Lemmy in Hawkwind and Lemmy in Motörhead, leaving sufficient room for wailing, noodling solos and a vocal croon that is halfway between Ian Gillan or Geddy Lee‘s high-pitched, semi-operatic prowess and Ozzy Osbourne’s insidious howl. The band’s songs list from side to side like a vessel cast adrift on an ocean of battering soundwaves.

“We are absolutely thrilled to partner with Tee Pee Records to unleash the fourth Danava record upon the underground,” comments Meleney.

“Many of our friends and contemporaries have passed through the ranks and we’re thrilled to march onward into the streets with them at our side.”

In the past seven years, DANAVA has unleashed a slew of critically-celebrated releases including the full length records Danava (2006), UnonoU (2008) and Hemisphere of Shadows (2011) as well as split releases with Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats and now – labelmates Earthless and Lecherous Gaze. The band has toured the world relentlessly both as headliners and alongside bands such as Down, Melvins, Witchcraft and Thrones.

In addition to Meleney, DANAVA features Zachariah Dellorto Blackwell (bass), Matthew Oliver (drums) and Andrew Forgash (guitar).

Find DANAVA online and ACTION! PR online (website/facebook/twitter).

“What is the sound of one van rocking? That would be the epic sludge riffage and hallucinatory fervor of Danava… sonic thunder, a sort of psych-prog-metal Frankenstein… far too dense and unwieldy to touch the Billboard album chart” – ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

“Danava plays complex and difficult music. It’s metal, sure, but this is definitely metal of the progressive type. There are arpeggios. There are keyboards. There are odd time signatures. There are definitive devil horns of the high-in-the-sky kind. The hard, psych rock of Blue Cheer and Thin Lizzy is a starting point. The finishing line is somewhere very far and very weird” – WILLAMETTE WEEK

“Danava’s psychedelic prog-metal draws from the likes of early Black Sabbath and David Bowie, but only slightly… apocalyptic postpunkdom” – TIME OUT NEW YORK

THE SAINT JAMES SOCIETY Reveal Title Track from Debut LP

(Austin, TX) – Occult psych rock band THE SAINT JAMES SOCIETY will release its full length debut Bab(a/y)lon Rising on March 12 via Tee Pee Records. Put to tape at East Austin’s Cacophony Recorders with award winning producer Erik Wofford (The Black Angels, Roky Erickson, White Denim), the LP showcases eleven tracks of the band’s unique “desert glam” and is the full length follow up to the group’s self-titled EP which landed at the #1 position in the Austin Chronicle‘s year-end critic’s poll.

“A black-lit amalgam of glam swagger, leather-jacketed hard rock, and occult psychedelia” – Austin Chronicle

Check out THE SAINT JAMES SOCIETY’s Bab(a/y)lon Rising here.

THE SAINT JAMES SOCIETY plays electrifying rock music that brilliantly connects the dots between dark 60’s blues-based garage rock and early ’80s post punk resulting in a hypnotically powerful sound the fabulous four-piece calls “Pentecostal Desert Glam”. TSJS’s full length debut – the mystically-titled Bab(a/y)lon Rising – pulses through the speakers like punk rock gypsies on a rampage, perfectly capturing the band’s apocalyptic nomad-rock as it drips with dark fuzz and acid drone that will surely find favor with restless sinners everywhere.

“Whereas our EP defined what we like to call ‘Desert Glam’, Bab(a/y)lon Rising has refined that sound,” says TSJS frontman Brandon Burkart.

“This record is filled with songs of sex and death, of sleepless nights, serpentine highways and mystic road chants for the eternal wanderer.”

Equal parts style and sound, THE SAINT JAMES SOCIETY blends sex, rebellion and mysticism with a fascination for western mystic traditions and secret societies, creating modern music that aims to awaken something deep and wonderfully dangerous within the listener. It has been said that “The Saint James Society sounds as good as any band on the planet at full volume,” a point to which the band’s bustling fan network of artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, photographers, creeps and thieves would most assuredly agree. When the heavy swagger of vocalist / bassist Burkart and golden guitars of Dahveed Dubois align with the band’s heavy-footed rhythms, ticking-time-bomb beat and stunning twin vocal tandem of rebel queens Elza Burkart and Candice Bertalan, the resulting musical statement mainlines the thrill of defiance straight to the listener’s heart.

THE SAINT JAMES SOCIETY (pictured from L to R): Brandon Burkart, Candice Bertalan, Dahveed Dubois and Elza Burkart

Track Listing:
1.) Refractions
2.) Bab(a/y)lon Rising
3.) The Serpentine Highway
4.) Blood & Sand
5.) The Book of the Jaguar Priest
6.) Get Cold
7.) Post Tenebras Lux
8.) Ode to the Turquoise Ox
9.) Letters Signed in White
10.) Celestial Symbols Interpreted
11.) House of Snakes

THE SAINT JAMES SOCIETY will debut more new songs from Bab(a/y)lon Rising in the coming weeks. Select songs from the album will also score a four separate chapters of a unique music / art / film crossover by acclaimed director Juan Azulay (The Blue of Noon, Insatiable Vine).

“A black-lit amalgam of glam swagger, leather-jacketed hard rock, and occult psychedelia” – THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE

“Austin “Pentecostal desert glam” band The Saint James Society looks freaky and sounds killer – or is it looks killer and sounds freaky?” – BLURT

“Ideal music for black lights and bong hits at midnight” – VEGAS SEVEN

“Rock is not dead” – BOISE WEEKLY

Primitive Blast received rave review since its release, being called “collision of ’70s headiness and ’80s hardcore angst” by the LA Weekly.
SPIN says THE SHRINE are “shit-kicking SoCal pool-skaters (that) bridge Black Flag and Sabbath via Cro-Mag hooks and high energy sludge” and the band was just spotlighted as part of the Converse x Decibel series, Talking Rock and Skateboarding, as they turn found space and hideous architecture into skate heaven.
Plus, check out legendary skater Mike Vallely “killing” Double Rock to Primitive Blast HERE.
THE SHRINE is Josh Landau (guitar/vocals), Courtland Murphy (bass) and Jeff Murray (drums).

“Although they draw from multiple genres, THE SHRINE defies the categories of metal or punk, thrash or doom, creating a sound uniquely their own, which they’ve christened “psychedelic violence.” One of the first to recognize and help foster their sound was none other than original Black Flag bass player and co-owner of SST Records, the legendary Chuck Dukowski… heavy, hilarious, fast and loud”ESPN

“THE SHRINE plays music that, by design, gets to the point. There’s no filler here, there’s no pretense and no buildup, it’s just pure hardcore intensity, rage and passion all to be taken with a grain of salt of course. This is punk rock for the new vinyl generation. It’s crossover thrash played through Orange amps. This is what you should be listening to this summer when you hop your neighbors fence, drain their pool and skate the shit out of that motherfucker”HEAVY PLANET

BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA to Release New EP

BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA (photo C. Jenkins)

“Heavy Mental” psych rockers BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA will release The Storm Generation, their debut EP for Tee Pee Records on December 11. On The Storm Generation, thick, colorful bass lines coexist with flying reverb guitars, ethereal chants and loud, tribal drums. Produced by Scott Reeder (Kyuss, The Obsessed) in the Mojave desert, the EP features a guest appearance by Nobel Prize-nominated gonzo poet Ron Whitehead, adding even more color to BLAAK HEAT‘s signature psychedelia. The EP is a precursor to the band’s new full length The Edge of an Era, which is set for a March 26, 2013 release.

BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA‘s enticing blend of genres has been called “a dissonant symphony unveiling visions of great natural expanses” and is unlike anything you’ve likely heard before. The band’s transcendental tension between its heavy rock roots and an organic inclination to drift towards psychedelia pays homage to the vast collection of mind-expanding sounds the trio grew up on: neo-psychedelia, surf rock, spaghetti westerns, Middle Eastern scales and Far Eastern melodies.

“We spent all summer at our LA studio working on the new record,” comments BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA guitarist / vocalist Thomas Bellier. “The creative vibe was unbelievable, and the music just kept flowing. Soon we had way more than needed for a full-length record, so we talked to Tee Pee Records about doing an EP before the album, which they agreed to. The EP has something for everyone: hints of surf rock, massive basses, psych solos, shades of metal…it unleashes the uniqueness of the Blaak Heat sound.”
BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA collaborated with filmmakers Cole Jenkins and Andrew Baxter to document the recording of their new music alongside Reeder and the resulting five part behind-the-scenes videos have been posted online via The Obelisk. Check out the videos here (part 1part 2 / part 3 / part 4 / part 5).
Formed in 2008 in Paris, FranceBLAAK HEAT SHUJAA  promptly established itself as the ‘young Turks’ of European heavy psychedelia and boast a cinematic sound that has been called “Heavy Spaghedelia” featuring “psychedelic, meditative, trance-inducing” and “spacey atmospheres”. Blaak Heat Shujaa - Let a thousand parks bloom

“The dominance of the psychedelic, meditative, trance-inducing, spacey atmospheres and an overall rather slow pace of the sound surely recall bands like Yawning Man, Naam, Dead Meadow, Earthless, Colour Haze and even Om (not to mention decades of acid psychedelic music produced across the Atlantic Ocean)… you find yourself instantly thrown onto a horse galloping in the desert while sunset is flashing the sky with red and purple shades against the black horizon made of table mountains and saguaros” – DOOMMANTIA

“amazing… If you like desert rock, psychedelic rock or bands such as Tool, Naam, Colour Haze or even Earthless, you’ll like Blaak Heat Shujaa” – HEAVY PLANET

THE SHRINE: New Album in July

PRESS RELEASE

Venice Beach’s THE SHRINE to Release Primitive Blast on July 17

Hard Hitting Trio Signs with Tee Pee Records to Release Sophomore LP

Venice, CA LOUD rock band THE SHRINE has signed to Tee Pee Records.  The band’s new album Primitive Blast will be released on July 17. Boasting a BIG sound the trio has dubbed “Psychedelic Violence“, THE SHRINE – who Thrasher has called “a hard-hitting three-piece, combining the hooks and tones of classic rock with the energy and stage presence of a thrash band,” has been making waves in Los Angeles for the past few years, touring and sharing the stage with the likes of Kyuss Lives!, Pentagram, Graveyard, Fu Manchu, Howlin’ Rain, Holy Grail and The Sword. Primitive Blast is the highly anticipated follow up to THE SHRINE‘s 2010 self-titled debut which was produced by Black Flag’s Chuck Dukowski.

“It’s like crash landing our spaceship on some awesome planet where everyone is raging and headbangin’ and anyone who doesn’t like it can bless off,” said guitarist / vocalist Josh Landau of THE SHRINE‘s signing to Tee Pee Records. “We are most epicly stoked to present Tee Pee with “Primitive Blast”, our first true offering of psychedelic violence rock and roll.”

THE SHRINE “Primitive Blast” (Official Trailer) feat. NEW song “WHISTLINGS OF DEATH”!!

THE SHRINE are a pool-skating, acid-eating, rip-roaring trio whose “Psychedelic Violence Rock and Roll” will melt your face off!  The bad-ass new record Primitive Blast fuses the wilder riffs of your dad’s Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath LPs with the fury of a punk show getting busted by the cops and is so wild-eyed and surly that it has to be heard to be believed. Primitive Blast delivers a crossover bitch slap of gargantuan proportions that instantaneously announces THE SHRINE as the most devil-may-care gang of brothers to soil the streets of LA since DLR and EVH played The Troubadour. The band trancends labels like “hard rock”, “punk” and “heavy metal” and renders those tems obsolete.  Recorded on vintage gear and reel-to-reel tape through mountainous Marshall stacksPrimitive Blast is the perfect soundtrack to cracking your skull skating your neighbor’s empty pool (or to any other debaucherous gathering of longhairs), delivering nine blasts of searing guitar, spazzed-out drums and shook up bass lines that seriously signal THE SHRINE as a ticking time bomb that’s about to EXPLODE.

Members of THE SHRINE provide tech specs and introduce some history. ‘Primitive Blast’ is out on Tee Pee Records July 10th!
THE SHRINE is Josh Landau on guitar / vocals, Courtland Murphy on bass and Jeff Murray on Drums.

“A great rock band.  I think they have the potential to have a real impact on the rock scene.” – Brant Bjork (Kyuss Lives!)

“THE RATTLES AND SHAKES that have been waking LA in the wee hours of the night are supposedly tremors in the earth’s surface, but those who know THE SHRINE know better. From Los Angeles comes a hard-hitting three-piece, combining the hooks and tones of classic rock with the energy and stage presence of a thrash band. Artwork vibrated on the paper-thin walls of a 75-person capacity room as it crammed 150-plus people through the doors to see THE SHRINE.  By the end of the night, the venue’s floor (and anyone within five yards of the band) was covered in sweat, blood, and beer. All signs of yet another successful show by THE SHRINE.” – THRASHER
