Vancouver’s ANCIIENTS are the featured artist in the latest installment of “Converse x Decibel”. A mini-documentary about how the vast woodlands  and epic mountain ranges of British Columbia influence the band’s elaborate and progressive songs is streaming now at Decibel Magazine.

ANCIIENTS recently announced new North American tour alongside TESSERACT and SCALE THE SUMMIT. The “Altered State North America 2013” tour is scheduled to start on Thursday, October 10, in Edmonton, AB and will run through the United States and Canada before ending on October 29.

The band have also seen their first-ever appearance in Guitar World as part of the magazine’s September issue. The band’s interview with Guitar World can be read here.

ANCIIENTS are touring in support of their debut album, ‘Heart of Oak‘. The critically-acclaimed record is streaming here, and available now on Ltd Ed. digipack with 2 bonus tracks, jewel case CDLtd Ed. double gate-fold Lp, and digitally.

“At its best, Heart of Oak is immediate and electrifying, an album that suggests Anciients’ half-prog, half-pop metal is bound for big stages” – Pitchfork

“Anciients harness the power of prog for a greater good, making music you might actually remember. Scratch that — will remember. These guys are gonna be big” – Stereogum

“The band are nothing if not highly ambitious, as the wide range of sounds demonstrates, Anciients shifting from stoner rock to blasting death-lite to tricky, tech-y prog like no one’s business” – Exclaim

“Heart Of Oak is an impressive many-sided record that will please a diversified group of music fans. Devotees of all things metal and rock will find something that Anciients does to love” – Stereokiller

SCALE THE SUMMIT Announce Tour With TESSERACT, ANCIIENTS

Fresh off a successful tour with Intronaut, instrumental progressive quartet SCALE THE SUMMIT will return to the road this fall during a North American tour with Tesseract. The three-week trek — which immediately follows Tesseract’s tour with Katatonia and Cult of Luna — kicks off in Canada on Oct. 9 and also features opening act Anciients.

In addition, SCALE THE SUMMIT was recently invited to take part in next year’s Cruise To The Edge with legendary English group Yes, with whom they will also take the stage this weekend at the inaugural progressive rock festival Yestival at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ. This marks another addition to the impressive list of groups SCALE THE SUMMIT will have performed alongside, a who’s-who of progressive metal ranging from modern genre leaders Protest the Hero, Periphery and Between The Buried And Me to iconic acts such as Dream Theater, Cynic and Devin Townsend.
Upon its June release, SCALE THE SUMMIT’s new album The Migration cracked the Billboard Top 200, peaking at #3 on the magazine’s Heatseekers chart. Recorded at Basement Studios with Jamie King (BTBAM), The Migration received a perfect 10/10 score from Outburn Magazine and a near-perfect 4.5-star rating from Alternative Press, who labeled the album “post-rock at its most melodic and dynamic best.”

About:

A five piece group based out of Vernon, British Columbia, Canada, following in the footsteps of bands such as: Behemoth, Dissection, and Immortal, XUL have left the beaten path and set out to forge their own brand of Blackened Death Metal.

An energetic and interactive live performance – with crushing rhythms seamlessly coalescing into atmospheric passages, accompanied by punishing percussion waves and subtle vocal harmonies – expands upon the previously established essence of the sub-genre. With songs reminiscent of war-torn landscapes, destructive human nature and evil intent, XUL has captivated audiences and garnered positive reviews, and on June 16, 2012, released their first full length album, entitled Malignance.

Driven by determination and a diverse accumulation of musical comprehension, XUL has toured Western Canada, as well as proven themselves worthy to share the stage with bands such as: Obscura, Exhumed, Vreid, Kampfar, Woods of Ypres, Macabre, Withered, Cephalic Carnage, Archspire and 3 Inches of Blood. With a spring 2013 tour looming, XUL is determined to build on an impressive local following by infecting Western Canada with hopes of Canada in its entirety in the near future. XUL’s focus for winter 2012 is to meticulously craft new material for another release in 2013.

#10 of Top 20 Best Albums of 2012 for MetalMadeInCanda.ca

“Xul continue to offer a barrage after barrage of obliterating death metal… when the sheer fire power and dexterous performances that Xul serve up are so satisfying. Particularly when you consider that is the band’s debut album. Malignance is undeniably impressive.” – Powerplay Mag UK

“one of the most impressive debut’s I’ve heard in a very long time. Rarely are the similar artists mentioned in press kits an entirely accurate estimation of the soundscapes to be found within an album proper, but I find the examples of Behemoth and Dissection are quite fitting in this case, as the band excels at weaving the brutality of the former with the epic melodious propensity of the latter, not to mention the grandiosity inherent to both, into a rich and exciting tapestry of extremity” – Metal-Archives.com

“will appeal to fans of black/death metal. Hard-hitting and brutal, intensity does not let up until the very last song” – TheFrontRowReport.com

“Xul operate within the genre of blackened death metal, taking cues from blackened death metal giants like Behemoth, black metal legends like Immortal and Mayhem, as well as death metal demigods like Morbid Angel. They have taken all of these inspirations and combined them into their own artistically highly successful brand of blackened death metal, which features the brutality of death metal and the darkness and evil of black metal. Thus, you get and album the treats you to both the machine-gun bass drums, guttural vocals, and technically proficient playing associated with death metal and the tense harmonies, tremolo picking, and blazing blast beats associated with black metal… a huge artistic success and captures what I consider to be the best from both death metal and black metal” – Metal Music Archives

“a raging, rolling machine of Black-tinged Death Metal” – MetalObserver

“the band manages to make a sound that encompasses the Death Metal ‘old school’ with the current time style that combines technical, brutality and a very dark mood, as do Belphegor, Behemoth and Azarath” – Whiplash (Brazil)

“a stunning display of musicianship with its ultra-slick leads, hyper-speed percussion and incredible bass tone. Meyers’s fetid vocals salivating on the album’s rotting body ties the whole gruesome scene together. Xul wreak Vengeance on the ears of death metal fans, forcing their way in the cortex to fester and boil. This is one Malignance you’ll be dying to have” – Kingdom of Noise

“I love death metal that takes no prisoners” – Battl Helm

“The first track sets the pace for the whole album; hard hitting, ear splitting, skull crushing brutality. Battlestorm, indeed! Strong black influences shine through, especially in tracks like Porta Nocis, and Vengeance, while the instrumental Winter’s Reign leaves you spellbound. I have to admit to being really impressed with the amount of work these northern bastards have put into this, and I highly recommend it” – Canadian Black Metal

“a very great sounding heavy and brutal blackened death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS  INCLUDE Battlestorm, Winter’s Reign and Tomb Of The Tyrants” – BringerofDeathZine
